The Vancouver Canucks continue their road trip Saturday with a matchup against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Oddsmakers list New York as a -147 favorite, with the total set at 5.5 goals.

New York has struggled offensively, scoring three or fewer goals in eight of its past nine games. This trend is likely to continue Saturday, as I explain in my Canucks vs. Rangers predictions.

Read on for my NHL picks for March 22.

Canucks vs Rangers prediction

My Canucks pick: Rangers team total Under 3.5 (-173 at Pinnacle)

My Canucks analysis
The New York Rangers' recent offensive struggles reflect a sustained issue in generating high-danger scoring chances over the past two months. New York ranks in the bottom half of the league in xGF/60 over that stretch.

This lack of offensive production is likely to continue against the Vancouver Canucks, who rank eighth in xGA/60 over that same period. Backing up this strong Vancouver defense is goaltender Kevin Lankinen, who is projected to start Saturday.

Lankinen has played well, allowing three or fewer goals in nine of his last 11 starts.

Scoring four goals against Vancouver is a tall task, given its combination of strong defensive play and dependable goaltending. The Canucks are also excellent on special teams.

Vancouver ranks third in penalty kill percentage, which should help limit New York’s scoring. The Rangers have failed to exceed 3.5 goals in seven of their past 11 games against the Canucks.

Canucks vs Rangers odds analysis

New York opened as a -150 favorite and has since shifted to -147. This line is likely to drop further, given the factors mentioned above.

The total opened at 5.5 and has not changed. While the juice favors the Under, it remains unlikely that oddsmakers will drop the total to five.
