Flames vs Ducks Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

Between the Flames' lockdown defense and the exceptional play of Ducks netminder John Gibson, goals will be at a premium when these two teams collide at the Honda Center.

The Calgary Flames and Anaheim Ducks are set to square off for the first time this season tonight.

Both teams have been hard on Over bettors, combining for a 27-48-3 O/U record on the year. My Flames vs. Ducks predictions forecast another lower-scoring game in the cards between the two Pacific Division foes.

Let’s take a closer look at my NHL picks for Tuesday, January 7.

My Flames analysis

The Calgary Flames have dropped six of the past 10 games, but it hasn’t been due to their defense. They’ve tightened the screws of late, particularly during 5v5 play.

The Flames rank 10th in expected goals allowed, sixth in goals against, and fourth in shot share during that span. They are not giving up many quality opportunities and are effectively keeping the puck out of the net as a result.

However, what has held them back is the offense. The Flames rank 21st in even-strength and power-play goals over their last 10 games.

With more of a by-committee approach offensively — rather than a few stars taking over any given shift — the Flames need to generate opportunities in bulk to score. They can’t rely on consistently high-end finishing.

That’s unlikely to change against the Anaheim Ducks this evening. John Gibson is expected to get the net for Anaheim and he’s been nothing short of terrific all season long.

Dostal owns a sparkling .912 SV% and boasts 12 goals saved above expectation, one of the highest marks in the league. No matter the caliber of the opponent or how many opportunities the Ducks concede, Gibson has done a great job of keeping pucks out of the net.

Given the Flames' stingy defense and how well Gibson has performed at the other end, there isn't a great recipe for offense.

Flames vs Ducks same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 6.5

Connor Zary Over 1.5 shots

Alex Killorn Under 0.5 points

Connor Zary has generated shots at a healthy rate all season long. He’s recorded multiple in 67% of his games and enters play having cleared 1.5 shots in seven of his last eight games.

Meanwhile, Alex Killorn has really struggled in his debut season with the Ducks. The veteran winger has just three points over his last 10 and hasn’t recorded multiple shots in a single game since the holiday break.

The Flames are giving up very little at 5v5 and Killorn doesn't skate on the top power-play unit, leaving little room for him to produce offense.
