We get to enjoy our first Battle of Alberta very early this season, with the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers set to square off in just their third game of the year.

My Flames vs. Oilers predictions see the offenses shining in this one, with both teams contributing their share to the total. Let’s break it all down with my October 13 NHL picks.

Flames vs Oilers prediction

Flames best bet
Andrei Kuzmenko Over 0.5 points (-115 at BET99)

My analysis
We’re going right back to the well with Andrei Kuzmenko, who continues to be a prolific weapon for the Calgary Flames. He's fit in seamlessly in Calgary, hitting the ground running with 29 points through his first 31 games.

Kuzmenko has meshed beautifully at 5-on-5 with Nazem Kadri, who has 79 points over his last 84 games and — even at 34 — is showing no signs of slowing down.

He's also taken on a role as a primary facilitator on the top power-play unit. He is tied for the team lead in power-play assists over the last 25 games, while only Kadri has him bested in total points (by one).

The puck is on Kuzmenko’s stick a ton. With the Edmonton Oilers slow out of the gate, and in a back-to-back situation, Kuzmenko and Calgary’s offense should be able to do some damage.

Oilers best bet
Leon Draisaitl Over 0.5 assists (-125 at BET99)

My analysis
Leon Draisaitl is an elite goal scorer, but he’s also one of the best passers in the NHL. He has stacked up at least 65 assists in back-to-back seasons, totaling more than all but Connor McDavid, Nikita Kucherov, Nathan MacKinnon, and Quinn Hughes over that time. He's as consistent as they come in terms of playmaking.

Draisaitl’s yet to record his first assist of the season but bad luck seems as big of a factor as any. The Oilers have piled up 61 shot attempts, 25 scoring chances, and 11 Grade A looks with Draisaitl on the ice through two games — and he’s no doubt helped create a plethora of them.

Unfortunately for Draisaitl, only one puck has found the back of the net and it came off Draisaitl’s stick.

He's skating with a pair of excellent shooters (Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner) during 5-on-5 play. He also has exposure to Connor McDavid, Zach Hyman, and the heavy shooting Evan Bouchard on the top power-play unit. He has the surroundings necessary to maximize the chances he creates. The puck just hasn’t gone in.

The Oilers are off to an 0-2 start and will want to put that to bed before the hole reaches the depths of the one they fell into early last season. I’m expecting a very determined effort from them and see Draisaitl causing problems for a Flames side that’s allowed eight goals through two games.

Flames vs Oilers same-game parlay (SGP)

Leon Draisaitl Over 0.5 assists

Andrei Kuzmenko Over 0.5 points

Nazem Kadri Over 0.5 points

I love the correlation here by adding Kadri to the parlay. He's attached to the hip with Kuzmenko at even-strength as well as on the power play. If one of them finds the scoresheet, the connectivity between the two will likely lead to the other getting in on the fun.

Both players have four points through two games. Three of them came from goals where Kadri and Kuzmenko were each involved.
