The Philadelphia Flyers freefall continues as they extended their double-digit losing streak yesterday. Now, they have to turn around and try to end this skid on the road against the New York Islanders tonight at UBC Arena.
The Islanders are coming off a tough loss to Toronto but have won six of their last eight games — including consecutive wins against Philadelphia last week — and are massive NHL betting home favorites for this contest.

Puck line analysis
The Flyers have basically hit rock bottom.
After dropping consecutive games to the Islanders last week, Philadelphia lost to Columbus, Buffalo, and Dallas and now riding a 12-game winless streak — its second double-digit losing skid in a 42-game span this year — and is tied for last in the Metropolitan with New York... except Philly has played eight more games.
The Flyers possess the third-worst goal differential in the NHL (-41), spurred by a league-worst 1.91 goals per game (and 3.91 goals against per game) this month, and have been absolutely brutal on the road, going 1-7 SU in their last 8 away contests.
Philadelphia has also lost four of its last five road games by three goals — with Martin Jones, tonight's expected starter, between the pipes. The veteran netminder got off to a decent start in his first season on Broad Street but his goals-against average has risen (and his save percentage has dropped) every month and he's sporting a 4.63 GAA and .873 SV% in January.
The Islanders have been playing their best hockey of the season, winning six of eight games. Yes, the wins have come against Buffalo, Edmonton, New Jersey, Arizona, and Philadelphia (twice) — all currently non-playoff teams — while the losses were to better-quality clubs in Toronto and Washington, but guess what? They're playing Philly, who is as bad as anyone in the league right now.
The offense has been able to take advantage of weaker opponents, scoring at least three goals in each of its six recent victories, but the Islanders' strong play has been powered by the revitalization of their trademark defense — they've surrendered three goals just twice in their last 12 games.
The Islanders have now beaten the Flyers seven straight times, including four straight at home, and have won eight straight games as a favorite. They're better than their record indicates — and MUCH better than this Philadelphia team they are technically tied with in the standings — so we expecting them to hand the Flyers another ugly loss tonight.
Prediction: Islanders -1.5 (+125)
Over/Under analysis
The Flyers have topped two goals just twice in their last 10 games, with the offense struggling in every facet. At 5 on 5, Philly is 21st in Corsi For Percentage during this stretch (per Natural Stat Trick), 25th in scoring chances for and high-danger chances for per 60 minutes, and 29th in shooting percentage.
The power play is 26th with a 14.8% conversion rate over that same span, generating the third-fewest shots on goal per 60 minutes with the extra man and sitting dead last in expected power-play goals per 60 minutes.
This is a Philadelphia team that struggles to score in any situation, especially on the road, and it now has to go against the most adept team in the league right now at preventing goals.
On the flip side, the Islanders offense has exploited poor defenses — which the Flyers certainly are — but the team as a whole has still cashed the Under in seven of its last eight games and seven of its last nine divisional matchups.
Last week's game between these clubs at UBS Arena finished with a 4-1 final... and we're thinking something along the same line tonight too.
Prediction: Under 5.5 (-125)
Best bet
The Flyers are a miserable offense that's at their worst on the road and going against the Islanders, we'd be shocked if they get two goals tonight — let alone three.
New York isn't a great scoring team but, as mentioned above, it has been able to exploit some awful defenses. And that is exactly what the Flyers are, especially if they decided to start Jones — who has surrendered 3+ goals in seven of his last eight outings — in between the pipes tonight.
The Isles should be able to reach three tallies tonight, while Philly, well, should not, so we're looking at New York winning the race to three goals.
