Oilers vs Avalanche Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

A heavyweight clash pits Edmonton against Colorado tonight, and despite no lack of star power, it's strong goaltending and airtight defense that has Neil Parker eyeing a low-scoring affair.

A pair of Western Conference powerhouses hit the ice at Ball Arena, with the Edmonton Oilers visiting the Colorado Avalanche tonight.

Edmonton and Colorado are both scorching hot and playing high-end defense in front of sterling goaltending, and my Oilers vs. Avalanche predictions are calling for a low-scoring result as a result.

Oilers vs Avalanche prediction

My Oilers pick
Under 6 (+110 at BET99)

My Oilers analysis

The Edmonton Oilers have cruised to a 22-6-2 record across a two-month heater, and elite goaltending has been part and parcel.

Oilers netminder Stuart Skinner has turned in a 14-4-2 record, .910 SV%, and 2.42 GAA during that stretch, and he’s also allowed two goals or fewer in 12 of his past 17 starts. Edmonton opted to go with backup Calvin Pickard on Wednesday, so Skinner will return to the crease to face the Colorado Avalanche tonight.

Colorado has also seen its season take flight following the addition of netminder Mackenzie Blackwood in mid-December. The Avs have rattled off a 10-3-1 record since, and Blackwood has allowed two goals or fewer in each of his 12 starts while posting an elite .938 SV% and 1.68 GAA.

The Under may not seem sexy at first glance due to the abundance of offensive firepower that each club boasts, but Edmonton and Colorado have also been playing sound defense in front of their goalies.

Edmonton ranks fifth in both Corsi For percentage (52.9%) and expected goals against per 60 (2.22) at five-on-five while also ranking third in penalty-kill percentage (85.5%) during their highlighted heater. Meanwhile, Colorado has also been solid with a ninth-ranked 52.5 CF%, 2.37 xGA/60, and second-ranked 90.6 PK% during its recent surge.

Oilers vs Avalanche same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 6

Leon Draisaitl Over 2.5 shots

Nathan MacKinnon Over 3.5 shots

Another day, another Over in the shots market for Edmonton star Leon Draisaitl. He has recorded three or more shots in 28 and 44 games this season, including 13 of his past 17.

Draisaitl ranks in the 98th percentile of shots on goal and 95th in offensive zone time at even strength among forwards, and he also logs huge minutes (21:23 with 3:14 on the power play), including his role as a go-to shooter with the man advantage (13.93 shots and 24.06 attempts per 60 minutes).

Flipping to Colorado superstar Nathan MacKinnon, he paces the club in both shots (9.77) and attempts (18.33) per 60 minutes, and his shot volume climbs with the altitude with respective 10.09 and 19.17 home marks.

Additionally, I’m anticipating MacKinnon to have a little extra space and more shooting opportunities with Edmonton playing the second leg of a back-to-back road spot — including its third game in four nights on the highway.
