The Edmonton Oilers and Utah Hockey Club are both hoping to put a halt to their current losing streaks. The Oilers enter tonight’s game as losers of two straight games, while the Utah Hockey Club has fallen in their previous four contests.
Despite coming up short, the Oilers have still found ways to score goals, while Utah has struggled to find the back of the net. With Edmonton’s high-octane offense, my Oilers vs. Hockey Club predictions believe the Oil should have no issue outscoring Utah tonight.
Find out why my NHL picks for Tuesday, December 31st, 2024, favor the home team.

My Oilers analysis
Despite their two-game losing streak, the Edmonton Oilers have really turned things around as of late. They’re 8-3-1 in the month of December and for the most part, everything seems to be clicking. The Oilers are scoring goals at 5-on-5 and on the man-advantage, while also having a very successful penalty kill.
Edmonton has been the third-highest-scoring team this month, averaging 3.75 goals per game while converting at 35.5% on the power play (best in the NHL). Leon Draisaitl has been on an absolute tear and Zach Hyman has completely turned his season around. Draisaitl has tallied 23 points in his last 12 games, tallying nine goals with 14 helpers, while Hyman has notched 10 goals in his last 11 games, also adding three assists. Edmonton is a much more dangerous team when Hyman is producing, he has the ability to be a major x-factor. What shouldn’t get lost in the shuffle is how well Connor McDavid has played as well. He has 21 points in his last 12 games and is also on an 11-game point streak, he’s a machine.
The offense hasn’t come easy for the Utah Hockey Club as of late, they have scored two goals or less in four of their last five games and they’re 6-4-2 in their last 12 games. Defensively, Utah hasn’t been all that bad in this stretch, but they have allowed nine goals against in their last two games.
Utah hasn’t announced their starting net-minder yet, but it looks like Jaxson Stauber will get the nod and he has put up some impressive numbers this season. His last NHL games were in the 2022-23 season prior to his three starts with Utah this season. In those three starts, Stauber has a .928 save percentage and a 1.96 goals-against average, so there will be a challenge for the Oilers.
Edmonton should be able to dictate the pace of this game, they’re one of the best offensive teams in the league at generating in 5-on-5 play, skating to 11.81 high-danger chances per 60, which is the fifth-most in the league. To me, this is the Oilers game to lose.
Oilers vs Hockey Club same-game parlay (SGP)
Connor McDavid has had multipoint games in four of his last eight and is coming off of a two-assist performance. In the first meeting between these two teams, McDavid put up a goal and an assist, and I believe he can have a very similar impact on the game this evening.
Leon Draisaitl is averaging 3.06 shots on goal per game and has hit this mark in three of his last five contests. The Oilers have been averaging 29 shots on goal per game in their last 12 and should be able to challenge Utah tonight.
