My analysis
The Florida Panthers have stayed afloat despite some injuries in recent weeks, but it’s beginning to catch up with them. The recent addition of Brad Marchand helped replace Matthew Tkachuk on the wing, but a Selke Trophy favorite in Aleksander Barkov is harder to replace.
This will be the third straight game that Barkov has missed due to an upper-body injury and the Panthers have been outscored 6-2 in the previous two, including a 3-0 loss in Ottawa on Saturday afternoon. That was the Panthers' fourth straight loss after they won three of their previous four games — but all three of those victories came in overtime.
The Panthers are a respectable 7-5 on the second half of back-to-backs this season, but most of those weren’t with Vitek Vanecek in net. Florida is just 1-3 in Vanecek’s starts, and the netminder has allowed 12 goals in four games.
It’s ultimately too little too late for the Detroit Red Wings, but they’ve earned points in three straight games with wins over the Bruins and Hurricanes. They’re 20-16-3 at home this season, while the Panthers are 20-17-2 as the visitors.
The Red Wings have the rest advantage, are at home, and are healthier. Take them as the home dogs this evening as Florida nurses its wounds.
