There is a Central Division tilt on Tuesday’s NHL slate with the Colorado Avalanche hosting the Dallas Stars. NHL odds have Colorado as a moderate -142 favorite, while the total sits 6 or 6.5, depending on the book.
Colorado has fared well in this matchup over the past couple of seasons, winning five of the past six meetings. Three of those five wins came by at least a two-goal margin.
Will the Avs take care of business once again, or can Dallas pull off the upset on the road? Find out in my free NHL picks for Stars vs. Avalanche on Tuesday, February 27.

Stars vs Avalanche predictions
It has been a tough couple of weeks for the Dallas Stars, who have lost five of their past six games. These woes are likely to continue Tuesday, primarily because of how awful of a spot this is for the Stars considering they are on the second half of a back-to-back and playing their third game in four days.
Over those four days, they flew into North Carolina, then traveled to Dallas, and are now heading up to Denver. Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche have not played since Saturday, and even that was a home game, so travel was unnecessary.
On top of that, the Avs are the stronger team offensively. This season, they rank higher than Dallas in goals scored per game, shots on goal per game, and power play percentage.
Their underlying metrics are also better, ranking higher in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60) at 5-on-5. The Stars’ blueline can keep them in this game, but every team has struggled to slow Colorado down and it will not help their cause that we should see some tired legs due to the aforementioned schedule.
Finally, goaltender Alexandar Georgiev is slated to guard the cage for the Avs, and he has been seeing the puck well. Over his past four starts, Georgiev is 3-1 with a .902 SV% and 2.77 GAA.
This success is likely to continue against Dallas, a team he has played well against in his career with a 5-2 record, .910 SV% and 2.74 GAA.
My best bet: Avalanche -1.5 (+172 at FanDuel)
Stars vs Avalanche same-game parlay
Taking a favorite’s puck line with the Over is typically a good pairing. If we need a team to win by two or more goals, then we need some goals.
That is rarely ever a concern for this Colorado team. With one of the fastest and most electric offenses in the league, it should not be shocking that there have been seven or more total goals scored in 16 of the Avs’ past 22 games.
Meanwhile, goaltender Jake Oettinger is slated to start between the pipes for Dallas. Over his past two starts against the Avalanche, Oettinger is 0-2 with a fade-worthy .881 SV% and 4.18 GAA.
There were seven or more total goals scored in each of those two outings, and Colorado won each matchup by a three-goal margin.

Stars vs Avalanche moneyline and Over/Under analysis
The Avalanche opened as a -142 favorite and remain at that price as of Tuesday morning. I think the market will only push this line in Colorado’s direction, given the difference in recent scheduling and the other aforementioned variables.
That brings us to the total, which opened at 6.5 and also remains at that number at the time of writing. That number can still be found at plus-money, but I am not sure how long that will last given that the Avs are one of the best and most popular Over teams in the league.
This total won’t reach seven, but I would be shocked if we still see the Over 6.5 at plus-money come puck drop on Tuesday.
