The Dallas Stars wrap up their homestand with a matchup against the Minnesota Wild at the American Airlines Center tonight
My Wild vs. Stars predictions look at Minnesota as a live underdog on the road. Find out why in my NHL picks for March 24 below.
Wild vs Stars prediction
My best bet: Wild moneyline (+180 at DraftKings)
My analysis
The Dallas Stars came out of the 4 Nations break hot with six wins in their first seven games, but things have taken a turn for the worse since adding Mikko Rantanen at the trade deadline.
Dallas is still trying to figure out how to work the talented winger into its lineup, resulting in a 3-2-2 stretch since March 8.
Dallas has played a lot of hockey in the last week-plus as this will be its fifth game in nine days and sixth in the last 11. The Stars’ last four games have all gone past regulation with wins over the lowly Ducks and Flyers.
On the flip side, the Minnesota Wild have won three games in a row with a goal differential of 11-2. They beat the Kings 3-1, the Kraken 4-0, and the Sabres 4-1. While the only tough opponent in that span is Los Angeles, this price of +180 doesn’t make sense.
The Wild are 40-25-5 on the year — just seven points behind the Stars — with an impressive 22-10-3 road record. They're still without Kirill Kaprizov and Joel Eriksson Ek, but that hasn’t impacted their play on the defensive side of the ice.
Hopefully, Filip Gustavsson will be between the pipes tonight, with Marc-Andre Fleury getting the start against his former team on Tuesday night at home.
Gustavsson has started the last three games with two goals allowed on 84 shots. He is now 28-15-4 on the year with a 2.48 GAA and .917 SV%.
Finally, the Wild have outperformed the Stars when playing against tough competition. Minnesota is 13-12 against teams that win at least 55% of their games while Dallas is just 9-14.
Wild vs Stars same-game parlay (SGP)
If the Wild can take down the Stars, it will be a low-scoring affair. Minnesota has gone Under the total in eight of its last 10 games with the Stars going Under in four of their last six.
Wild winger Mats Zuccarello is averaging Over two shots on goal per game with 125 SOG in 57 contests (2.19 per) and has 2+ SOG in eight of his last nine contests. He’s taken a more aggressive approach with Minnesota down a few key forwards.
