Edgar vs Vera betting preview

Frankie "The Answer" Edgar comes into this fight as the No. 8-ranked bantamweight contender after suffering a first-round knockout loss to Cory Sandhagen in February. That was Edgar's second fight at 135 pounds after making his bantamweight debut with a split decision victory against Pedro Munhoz in August of 2020.

The former lightweight champion has enjoyed a terrific career with epic battles against B.J. Penn, Gray Maynard, Benson Henderson, and Jose Aldo. However, he's just 2-4 in his last six fights, with three of those defeats coming by way of stoppage. The 40-year-old is a very well-rounded fighter that combines a wrestling background with strong technical boxing.

Marlon "Chito" Vera is No. 13 in the UFC bantamweight rankings after a unanimous decision win against Davey Grant in June. Chito has alternated wins and losses in his last four fights, with an upset win over Sean O'Malley sandwiched between decision losses to Aldo and Song Yadong.

The 28-year-old is now 7-2 in his last nine UFC fights, with six of those wins coming by finish. Vera has a background in BJJ and is an excellent grappler, with eight of his 17 victories coming by submission. He's also a slick kickboxer with some pop in his hands.

Edgar vs Vera UFC prediction and betting pick

Neither fighter can really afford a loss in this bout because a defeat would likely signal the curtain call for Edgar, while an L for Vera would relegate him to a lifetime of gate-keeping in the periphery of the rankings.

Expect plenty of action from both fighters, and while Edgar's movement and volume were once strengths of his game, they've been compromised by age and he'll need to implement his wrestling if he wants to grind out a win.

Unfortunately, Vera is a dangerous grappler off his back and is the more diverse striker at this stage of their careers. Chito should be able to damage Edgar enough in the standup to pull off the victory.
