In the time of Jesus, the literacy rate was less than 5%....So there really wasnt much point writing about him because no one could have been able to read it.
The main form of communication and reliance of information was via oral transmission.
Today, we rely on newspapers, email, contracts, twitter, journals, TV, websites for our information as our literacy rates are around 85% etc etc
So we shouldnt equivocate todays standard of communication to that of 2000 years ago.
Furthermore, Jesus said that his kingdom is NOT of this world. So, he didnt go around promoting himself as a rockstar or to get rich. He came to serve as opposed to be served. He was very poor. You must also remember that approx 90% of people hated him. The person think and still think there messiah is rich in a material way - "A super Bill Gates" not a poor man from bethlehem.
People who maintained there belief in Jesus were threatened with persecutuion. Therefore, people werent going around proclaiming loudly to be a follower of his.
There are independant writings of Jesus OUTSIDE the bible from non believers....Like Jospehus.
The main point is that you shouldnt compare todays standards to that of 2000 years ago, it was pretty much the complete opposite of what we see today in terms of communication.
In terms of evidence etc etc, if we think of todays standards, you are right, it is very insufficient, but you couldnt imagine how different it was 2000 years ago....
