Public media outlets are quitting twitter because of false labeling that undermine their credibility by suggesting government controlled media.  Despite some government funding,  there has always been editorial independence in National public radio, Public broadcasting service, Canadian broadcasting corporation,  British broadcasting corporation and Voice of America.  Unlike state interest, public interest is more about accountability and freedom of speech.  Public media outlets don't want to be labelled "state affiliated" or 'government funded" such as propaganda outlets from China and Russia.

Kurtz explained that the case centered on Trump's false claims

Yeah, it is bizzare and scary!

Twitter experiments with changes to verification have led to chaos.  Now harder for users to determine an account's authenticity.  Twitter verification may not confirm an account is who it claims to be.  Instead it indicates a user paid subscription for twitter service.
