Great stuff as always VZ! I’m a bit surprised to see you flip on Argentina. I get what you’re saying about Netherlands exposing the U.S. But can we really compare the U.S. to Argentina? The Argentina D have given up one goal in 3 matches since being shocked by Saudi Arabia. My thoughts are the Saudi shocker was just what they needed, a wake up call. Outside of Pullisic, how many U.S. players even make the Argentina team? I also understand Netherlands are a step up in quality. However, I feel like they got by with a relatively easy group stage. Qatar being a total freebie. Have they really been tested? Much appreciation and respect to you. You’re my favorite read on Covers, always have been. I’m just big on Argentina to advance tomorrow and was super disappointed…. and now quite worried after reading your write up. Nonetheless, best of luck to you. Cheers!
Thanks Kaufee.

Thanks to your analysis on the game I played the under 2.5 goals. Curious why you don't follow your own advice and play totals more often? Anyways thanks for doing what you do. It's a treasure to this website.
Thanks Getty - always great to see you.
If I only listened to myself this tournament - I would be up way more. I am kicking myself.

What a great day. “But Vanzack, you lost a ton of money today”! Yes, I did. I went 0-2 today, and lost something like 6 units. Ouch. And I am not minimizing the reality of anyone who followed. But….
I am rarely a “fan” of sports. What we gamblers do beats the fan out of us. That childhood team that your dad took you to games to see? All of that allegiance is gone when you make that first bet against that team and root against them. We are not fans of any player, any team, any sport – we are extreme capitalists looking for our next edge.
Today is one of the very rare days where I am just thankful to be a part of this. The two matches we witnessed today were amazing spectacles, both dramas on the highest level – with characters that are hard not to root for – or against.
Tomorrow, it will all wash away as I pour over statistics, stare at a lines screen, think about risk and reward – but today…. Was childhood feelings. That great feeling I had when my dad took me to the game and we won a big one – and saw something magical.
Today was also very humbling – something we all need. I analyzed these matches to death – came up with likely scenarios – and in the second match it came down to a 13 year old pee wee league strategy of putting in your tallest guys and lump the ball forward and hope for the best. Literally. And it worked.
Nobody predicted that – I don’t care who you are. Nobody knew that we were going to witness two masterpieces that probably wouldn’t be equaled if they played those games another 100 times. We were lucky today.
We deal in razor thin margins in handicapping. Bettors have totally unrealistic expectations of success, and winning a little is never enough. I am victim of this also from time to time. Today knocked me back to reality. If there is a + sign next to your bankroll – you are doing something better than 95% of the folks out there trying to do the same thing.
Be grateful – be humble. Sometimes life puts these lessons in front of our faces – it is up to us to open our eyes.

This one is really simple to me… Portugal are scoring goals with incredible efficiency. I think the whole Ronaldo drama is out of the way – for now at least – and we saw what this team is capable of with him on the bench in the demolishing of Switzerland. There were times when Portugal looked out of shape – and the Swiss didn’t capitalize
I don’t think it is likely that Morocco can do it again, like they did against Spain. Morocco played a totally aggressive attacking game in the first half against Spain – and I was shocked to see that they really played with them – and hung around. Then 75 minutes of defending and PKs.
Portugal’s weapons – and versatility – will win out here. Portugal have plan A, Plan B, and Plan C – where Spain has only Plan A. Too many ways for Portugal to win, and not enough ways for Morocco to hang.
Portugal -140 (win 2.5 units) – Predicted Final Score Portugal 2 Morocco 0
England / France
What a matchup. Or so it seems on paper. England will likely switch to a 3 man back line – bringing Kyle Walker and all of his speed (he and Mbappe are 2 of the fastest 10 players in this tournament) to mark Mbappe down the left flank. If Mbappe switches sides, you should see Walker do the same. I get why England will do this – as we all know what a threat Mbappe is and there are very few defenders who have the pace and talent to neutralize him like Walker does.
So I expect Mbappe to be more like a magnet in this match, to drag defenders with him and open up space to the real weakness of the England side – the CB combo of Stones and Maguire. Not fast, not quick on their feet – big lumbering type of guys who can knock you in to tomorrow but wont be able to handle the speed of Griezmann, Dembele, and Rabiot.
The weakness of the French team is on their left flank – where their wingback Hernandez is often caught out of position going forward, and Mbappe doesn’t cover. But Rabiot has been slotting in nicely over there – covering the whole pitch at times – and so far is the unsung hero of this French team. So it presents an interesting dilemma for England – they will want to attack the left side – but they have to be careful because that is also the side the French can dominate in counterattacks if they don’t get back.
The talent and speed of France movement on the ball wins out here. England have a history of not quite being up to the challenge in these types of games – and there are reasons behind it – and in this one it is the defense that will be their undoing. France rolls here – this will probably be my biggest bet of the tournament…
France to Advance -135 (win 2.5 units), France to win in 90 +152 (2.5 units) – Predicted Final Score France 3 England 1

Love what you see in France. England is a good team, but France is a great team. I expect the difference in quality to be clear tomorrow. Your analysis on Mbappe is spot on. England’s goal will be to not let him beat them. Problem is there are plenty of other super stars willing to do that. Something tells me Antoine Greizmann reminds us tomorrow that he’s Antoine Griezmann.
Cheers VZ! BOL

It's not easy to do on a day like today, but you were able to separate the gambling and appreciate the Fantastic games we had before us. What the Netherlands did to tie it up was spectacular. They did the basketball equivalent of posting up their tall guys up in front of the box and shoot it in. Those fouls were the difference maker in regulation, but not quite enough in OT.

Wow ! Not only do I agree with your picks but I have the same exact scores ! I think Portugal gets one in the FH and another in the 2H. Not sure if I want to take Portugal or France to win it all. I don’t think Argentina is that good , line is off IMO

People overrate this England team IMO they are not potent at all and France is the very definition of potent.
It's gonna be Messi vs Mbappe in the final I mean it's so obvious. France is going to be my biggest bet of the quarters, though only my 3rd biggest of the tourney (Portugal over Swiss last time was 2nd biggest, Poland over Saudi was my biggest)

Ever since yesterday I watch for enjoyment and don't mind losing the bets. I had a feeling Morocco would win but was hesitant to bet it. But man what a game. I've been enjoying the games since yesterday more than anything and I feel the same way from your post yesterday van.
I can't wait to see more!

Pulisic who is of Croatian ethnicity on his grandfathers side at one time was talking to the Croatian FA about playing for Croatia and even got a Croatian Passport but decided to play for the US at end.

Yeah - wonder if Croatia are going to take a clue from that and present a more direct attack.

I just hope we get Argentina v France so I can take France large as long as they're -130 or so. Worst finals I can imagine would be a repeat of last WC with Croatia v France.

These teams are two pretty well known commodities at this point, and I don’t see either deviating very far from what brought them here. Should be very tight and one or two moments decide it. I favor Argentina slightly, and I also favor a low scoring match. But I think the odds sit pretty much where they should – so there is no “value” to me in the betting line – but I am going to take the under here in 90 because I have a >2 goal match at about 25%, while I have a <2 match goal match at about 35%.
Argentina / Croatia under 2 +106 (2 units) – Predicted Final Score 0-0 or 1-0 Argentina
Morocco / France
This one has a little more meat on it than the other semifinal for me. Morocco is still vastly undervalued IMO. This is really astounding: Morocco has let in 1 goal in their 5 matches against Croatia, Belgium, Canada, Spain, and Portugal and it was an own goal. I have to tell myself that over and over, because it is that crazy. And it is not an accident or fluke. They have been the most organized defensive side in the tournament, and I don’t really see why that changes in this one.
Yes, France has skill and speed at every position. And the one scenario that scares me is if France score early – say in the first 30 minutes – how Morocco will react. Because they have not been in that position in their first 5 matches. But if Morocco can avoid the early goal against, they should be able to counter France the same way that England did – and expose the French defense that has been clumsy and mistake prone.
This is a half value and half expectation wager. I really expect Morocco to keep it close, and potentially advance.
Morocco +.5 +170 (risk 3 units), Morocco to advance +375 (1 unit risk)

I am about to put 500 dollars on each dogs to win it all. One of them should be the dark Horse. Do you think it’s wise to bet 1000 dollars that Argentina nor France will not win it all. One pays +760 and the other -+900 so it will pay min 3,750. Should I put one first and the wait for the other? If croati wins then Morocco looses value.
