The No. 4 Maryland Terrapins provided one of the more definitive wins in the Round of 64.

The Terps pounded a capable Grand Canyon squad by 32 points and now set their sights on the No. 12 Colorado State Rams in the Round of 32.

While it may not be a 30-point drubbing, I’m confident the Terrapins win with ease on Sunday. That’s where you’ll find my best March Madness picks and Colorado State vs. Maryland predictions on Sunday, March 23.

Who will win Colorado State vs Maryland?

The outright odds give Maryland an 83% implied win probability against CSU. I have the Terrapins moving to the second weekend in my bracket.

Colorado State vs Maryland prediction

My best bet: Maryland Terrapins -7 (-110 at bet365)

The Maryland Terrapins toppled GCU and blew the closing 9.5-point spread out of the water on Friday. In fact, Maryland would have still crushed the opening line of -11.5.

Even as a No. 13 seed, the Antelopes were a quality opponent and perhaps even better suited to mess with Maryland than No. 12 Colorado State Rams.

The Rams got by No. 5 Memphis in the opening round, but the Tigers were missing one of their top scorers and shot horribly from the field versus a CSU defense that doesn’t do any one thing particularly well.

Maryland boasts the “Crab Five” — one of the deepest-scoring attacks in the country. All five starters averaging 12-plus points per game. If one star is having an off-game, someone is there to step up. And it’s the way the Terrapins put up those points that’s the real strength.

Maryland can hurt you from all over.

It has one of the best frontcourt tandems in the tournament with Derik Queen and Julian Reese dominating the interior. They anchor an inside presence that piles up almost 36 points in the paint per contest and wipes the offensive glass for second-chance looks (12.6 SCP).

Guards Ja'Kobi Gillespie, Rodney Rice, and Selton Miguel will either run you off the floor or knock down shots from long range. The Terrapins are 36th in 3-point success and 32nd in fastbreak points. Colorado State is soft on the perimeter (119th in 3-point defense) and will have to choose between doubling down on UMD’s post-action or getting their heels above the 3-point arc.

The biggest way the Terps can take your heart, however, is flipping defense into offense.

Maryland currently sits No. 6 in defensive efficiency with that metric powered by a chaos-causing approach, forcing 14.3 turnovers (13th), snatching 7.8 steals (55th) and swatting 4.6 blocks per game (37th).

From there, the Terps are off and running with a very un-turtle-like tempo. Maryland ranks 55th in transition offense and scores 18.1 points off turnovers (7th).

The Rams were able to limit their miscues in the win over Memphis (just 10 turnovers) but have been burdened by bad ball handling this season, including sloppy play entering the NCAA Tournament.

Game projections range from Maryland by five points to as high as a 12-point victory. I’m leaning toward the high side of those models, knowing the multiple ways Maryland has to not only win this Round of 32 matchup but cover the spread.

Colorado State vs Maryland same-game parlay (SGP)

Maryland -7.5

Derik Queen 15+ points

Derik Queen 10+ rebounds

The Terps have too many ways to win this game and I could see them winning by double digits.

Queen is projected for as many as 18 points against a CSU defense that got roughed up inside vs. Memphis.

Queen had 15 rebounds vs. GCU and had grabbed 10+ boards in 11 of his last 14 games.
