Get set for an exciting Saturday afternoon non-conference clash when the Mississippi Rebels travel to the FedExForum for a matchup with the Memphis Tigers.

The current history between the two suggests a closely contested ballgame, and my Mississippi vs. Memphis predictions expect to see that trend continue on Saturday.

Read on for my college basketball picks for Saturday, December 28.

My analysis

The Memphis Tigers have rolled through the non-conference portion of its schedule relatively unscathed, but one glaring problem still exists.

Turnovers.

The Tigers committed 18 in a home loss to Mississippi State. They committed 20 miscues in a loss to Arkansas State and 11 in a loss to Auburn.

Turnovers hurt worse when teams turn errors into points. Thus far, Memphis opponents have turned the Tigers 18 turnovers per game into 20 points per night.

It’s mostly why they have three losses and why they will lose to the Mississippi Rebels on Saturday at the FedExForum.

Mississippi must be licking its chops. The Rebels thrive off the miscue. They force nearly 17 turnovers they’ve turned into an average of 20 points per night.

The Rebels are extremely tidy with the rock. They boast the lowest number of turnovers per game, are terrific shooters from everywhere, and rarely beat themselves.

Memphis gets away with the turnovers because they are eighth nationally in three-point shooting percentage and make the 12th-most free throws per game.

That shooting wins games against most, but not against an experienced group with the fewest turnovers per game and better at everything else than Memphis is.

And Mississippi IS better than Memphis at everything else. They’ll bring seven Rebels with 1000+ career points, and they’ll hold their own on the windows.

What Mississippi won’t likely do is turn the ball over, and what they will do is apply tremendous pressure, force turnovers, and beat Memphis on Saturday.

Mississippi vs Memphis same-game parlay

Mississippi moneyline

Memphis +5.5 alt spread

Over 147.5 alt total

I like Mississippi to win, but I expect Saturday’s clash to be a close yet high-scoring game.

Memphis is only 5-5 ATS, and that’s why I chose the alternate spread. They are the favorite, and I expect them to play well, just not well enough to overcome their miscues.

Both teams like to play fast. Each side has terrific shooters from everywhere, and the tempo will allow for enough possessions to exceed the lower than the game total alternate totals.
