Who will win Pepperdine vs Oregon State?
Oregon State will survive another day in the WCC Championship. Wayne Tinkle has earned his reputation as a good tournament coach. Understandably, the Beavers are an 11-point favorite, considering they’re ranked 161 spots higher at KenPom.
They’ve taken care of business against the lower levels of the WCC but have dropped most of their games against the upper echelon, and Pepperdine represents the former.

My analysis
If you like Overs, Oregon State is the team for you. Tinkle’s squad is on a remarkable 14-1 O/U run in its last 15 contests.
It’s not too difficult to discern why that’s been the case — the Beavers are efficient on offense but woeful on defense. Since February 1, they rank 50th in adjusted offensive efficiency but just 306th in adjusted defensive efficiency (BartTorvik).
They have a willing dance partner in Pepperdine, which ranks 330th in adjusted defensive efficiency during the same period. The Waves are 4-1 O/U in their last five games, including eclipsing the 156.0 total in last night's 86-73 win over Portland.
Overs have been on fire to start this tournament, as all three games have exceeded the total thus far. The neutral environment at Orleans Arena has been friendly for points, and now we get two teams that have been dead set on the Over to end the regular season.
The Waves will rely on guard Moe Odum, who caught fire down the stretch against Portland and finished with 31 points and 11 assists. Tournaments are a time when guards can stay hot, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Odum continues his excellent play after completely taking over the game a night ago.
Conversely, Oregon State is proficient from 3-point range (37%) and at the rim (33rd in near-proximity field goal percentage per Haslametrics). Pepperdine isn’t equipped to stop either type of shot, ranking 228th in 3-point percentage allowed (34.2%) while also being poor at protecting the paint (253rd in near-proximity attempt rate, 298th in near-proximity field goal percentage allowed).

Considering Oregon State is untrustworthy when playing anywhere but Corvallis, this spread is a bit wide. The Beavers rank 343rd in Haslametrics’ Away From Home metric and are 1-5 ATS in their last six games outside Gill Coliseum. They’ve been a tough out at home (15-3 straight up) but a far easier tree to fell on the road (3-7 SU).
It’s difficult to handicap a team’s momentum, but it was clear that Pepperdine found something in last night’s come-from-behind 86-73 victory over Portland. The Waves scored 57 second-half points, with Odum running the show and dishing to Stefan Todorovic (18 ppg) and other open shooters. In a matchup against a soft defense, the momentum should continue surging.
