The Xavier Musketeers have had a long season playing in one of the nation’s toughest conferences.
They’ve had to battle the UConns and Marquettes of the world in a physical Big East with tight away whistles and rabid fans chirping their every movement away from Cintas Center.
The Georgia Bulldogs went 12-6 at Stegeman with an impressive 14-1 mark as the home favorite. While that looks nice on paper, they’ve won just three home games since January 1 (Arkansas, LSU, and Mississippi) and none of those teams will bring to the Coliseum what Xavier will tonight.
The Musketeers are a fast-playing group that can score the basketball. They aren’t the best shooters, but they can drain the triple, snag offensive caroms, and collect 13.8 points per contest from the 11.5 turnovers they force per matchup.
Xavier can score the basketball against this Bulldogs defense. The SEC reps are average defenders but their 72.4 points per game at Stegeman Coliseum was two points less than their season average. Georgia are poor rebounders on both ends of the hardwood — its partially why they’ve lost 11 of their last 14.
The Musketeers are physical inside. They rebound the basketball and do a better than average job at defending the triple. They’ll limit the Bulldogs’ offensive rebounding unit, and Georgia is going to have difficulties draining their eight 3s per night against the long, aggressive Musketeers perimeter defense.
Tough games were the soundtrack to each programs’ season. Xavier is a difficult team to beat anywhere, and Georgia has ridden the struggle bus at home against battle-tested, physical teams like Xavier who can score, rebound, and defend. Tonight’s tilt should be a hard-fought, but the better free-throw shooting and rebounding Musketeers will come out on top.
