An appropriate college football Saturday should always end with a home game for the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors, and we are so fortunate.
Well, “game” might be charitable, as the ‘Bows host the FCS-level Delaware State Hornets, as far from the elite of the FCS as it will be from Dover this weekend.

My analysis
Devout college football gamblers know it as the “Hawai’i Test.” It has very little to do with the success or failure of the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors. In fact, it has nothing to do with their on-field tenability. The Hawai’i Test can be passed regardless of Hawai’i’s success.
Will you stay up late enough to watch the entirety of a Hawai’i home game? There are seven late ones this season, including four kicking off at midnight ET like this one.
That is why we bet on Hawai’i games. Because without that investment, who is going to stay up past 3 a.m. ET to watch the Warriors run up the score on the Delaware State Hornets?
They will indeed run up the score, and not just because the Hornets missed their planned flight earlier in the week, a casual 12-hour jaunt, delaying their arrival to the mid-Pacific by a day or so.
Hawai’i head coach Timmy Chang has plenty of work left ahead of him in rebuilding his alma mater from the damage done by Todd Graham in just two seasons. The greatest amount of work remains on the offensive and defensive lines, but those interior worries should hardly persist against Delaware State.
That will allow Chang to build some momentum. His offense depends on timing, and repeatedly hitting deep passes this weekend will serve Hawai’i in weeks to come.
Bettering the Warriors’ offense for Mountain West play is too important not to lean into, so Chang should call threatening plays deep into a blowout, making a nearly 40-point spread still too low.

The design here is clear: Hawai’i is going to score. Delaware State will not.
No, really, the Hornets might not get a point on the scoreboard. The Warriors return their entire starting defensive back-seven, and that cohesion should prevent any explosive touchdown.
One blown coverage can yield a touchdown enough to cost Hawai’i covering this spread, but four seniors and two juniors amid those seven returning starters should be in the right coverages. At least, Timmy Chang hopes they will be.
In this design, the ‘Bows could reach the end zone eight separate times, and this SGP would still come home.

- A year ago to the day of this opener, Timmy Chang went on a VSiN broadcast and said he “pays attention” to the spread and win total: “I hear all those things, and I like that. I tell the guys that, this is what they think about you as a team.”
- The total opened in mid-July at 51.5, jumping to 55.5 on July 31 and striding upward this week, peaking at 57.5 before settling at 56.5.
