Did the Eagles cover the spread in Super Bowl 59?

Update: The Eagles covered the point spread as an underdog in Super Bowl 59. Philly beat the Chiefs, 40-22.

Eagles against the spread this season

Eagles spread backers were mostly happy this season as Philadelphia covered 13 of 20 games. The Birds covered 65% of the time and their ATS plus/minus was +6.2 heading into Super Bowl 59 against the Chiefs.

Philly has won five straight games outright and has covered in four of those. The only hiccup, betting-wise, was the Divisional Round game against the Los Angeles Rams. Philadelphia was a 7-point favorite going into that one but they won by “just” six points.

Super Bowl spreads history

Most Super Bowl spreads these days are pretty tight. The San Francisco 49ers were 2.5-point favorites over the Chiefs last year and the year prior, Philly was a 1.5-point favorite over the Chiefs.

The largest Super Bowl spread in recent history was the Rams favored by -4.5 over the Cincinnati Bengals three years ago. L.A. won the game by a score of 23-20, which was a win for Bengals +4.5 bettors.

There has not been a Super Bowl spread of a touchdown or more since 2009 when the Steelers were -7 vs. the Cardinals. The year prior, the Patriots were -12 favorites over the Giants.

The largest spread in Super Bowl history came in 1995 when the 49ers were whopping -18.5 favorites over the Chargers. San Francisco covered with a 49-26 victory.
