Super Bowl Odds, News, and Injuries: Chiefs Down a Big Man for Big Game

The Super Bowl is nearly upon us, with the San Francisco 49ers set to take on the Kansas City Chiefs at Allegiant Stadium.

Super Bowl odds

The most dramatic swing in the Super Bowl odds so far came within the first 24 hours of the matchup being set, as the San Francisco 49ers went from -2.5 to -1. Following that initial flood of Kansas City Chiefs money, the line has steadily made its way back to 49ers -2. Still, the Chiefs have garnered 60% of the tickets, according to Covers Consensus.

The total opened at 47 and the Over was hit immediately, with the line jumping to 47.5. It has since been glued to that number across the industry, with 68% of tickets on the Over, per Covers Consensus.

Super Bowl big bets

Though the Chiefs have been a popular pick from a volume standpoint, the 49ers have garnered the six biggest Super Bowl bets in the marketplace.

A bettor in Michigan placed $1 million on the Niners to win the Big Game at odds of -120 at Caesars. Four additional wagers of at least $500,000 have since come in on San Francisco, two via Caesars and two via DraftKings. Of this quintet, four were moneyline wagers and one was on 49ers -2. 

The sixth-biggest Super Bowl wager was placed for $205,000 on the San Fran moneyline (-125) at South Point Casino in Las Vegas, just ahead of a $200,000 wager on the Chiefs moneyline (+110) placed at FanDuel.

Meanwhile, Drake shared his $1.15 million bet on Chiefs moneyline to Instagram, captioning "I can't bet against the Swifties".

Super Bowl latest news

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked about chasing Tom Brady's seven rings, to which the 28-year-old signal-caller told Reuters, "I'm not even close to halfway, so I haven't put a lot of thought into it. I mean, your goal is to be the best player that you can be. I know I'm blessed to be around a lot of great players around me. And so, right now, it's doing whatever I can to beat a great 49ers team and try to get that third ring."

The Chiefs are trying to become the first team since Brady's 2003-04 Patriots to be a repeat Super Bowl champion. Despite their underdog status, the Super Bowl betting trends suggest K.C. will make history, as 12 of the last 16 Super Bowl underdogs have covered. The team to hoist the Lombardi Trophy has covered in 48 of the 57 previous Super Bowls.

Meanwhile, it's been a weird week for the 49ers, who complained of poor conditions on their practice field and were subjected to a false fire alarm at their Las Vegas hotel. Multiple 49ers believe the false alarm was an 'inside job'.

"I'm sure somebody did it," Nick Bosa told ESPN. "It kind of reminded me of Philly when they had this construction going on outside. It was early in the morning and they were like demolishing a bridge right outside of our hotel. We haven't had the best luck. But no excuses."

Super Bowl injuries

The most significant recent injury news concerns Chiefs guard Joe Thuney, who was ruled out for Super Bowl LVIII with a pectoral injury. Nick Allegretti, who took Thuney's place in the AFC Championship Game, will once again assume that role on Sunday.

Kansas City running back Jerick McKinnon, sidelined since December 17 with a groin injury, was activated from IR and is listed as questionable with a groin injury.

On the defensive side, the Chiefs will be without DE Charles Omenihu, who suffered a torn ACL in the AFC title game. He'll be replaced by Felix Anudike-Uzomah.

The 49ers have a clean bill of health going into the Big Game.
