Super Bowl 59 odds timeline
Sunday, January 26
Immediately following the Conference Championships, Super Bowl lines opened with the Kansas City Chiefs as 1-point favorites and at -120 on the moneyline, while the total was at 48. The Chiefs have been highly profitable in the playoffs during the Patrick Mahomes era, so it's no surprise books immediately saw money come in on the two-time defending champion Chiefs, shifting the line to -2 and the ML to -130 by early the next day.
Likewise, with both Conference Championship games soaring past the total, early money poured in on the Over, which quickly shifted the O/U from 48 to 49.5.
Friday, January 21
By Friday we saw some buyback on the Philadelphia Eagles, bringing the spread down to Chiefs -1.5 with their ML moved down to -125. Despite money continuing to come in on the Over, we strangely enough saw the total start drifting down to 49.
Monday, February 3
A week after the market opened, we started to see some interesting splits. The public was leaning toward the Eagles with 52% of the spread bets and 53% of the moneyline bets. However, 51% of the against-the-spread handle and 54% of the moneyline handle were on the Chiefs, indicating the sharp side. The spread moved to Chiefs -1 while their ML shifted to -115.
The public always likes to bet on Overs and, as of last Monday, 80% of the bets at Caesars had come in on the Over. Despite that, the total stayed steady at 49, showing oddsmakers may have been reluctant to move the O/U too high in a matchup between two strong defenses.
Thursday, February 6
As betting heated up, the money coming in on the spread flipped from the Chiefs to the Eagles. As of Thursday, 56% of the spread handle was on the Eagles but inversely 56% of the ML handle was on the Chiefs. That discrepancy was particularly interesting since the spread was at just a single point.
We also started to see significant buyback on the Under at this point in the week with the handle on the Over now sitting at 72%.
Saturday, February 8
The spread held steady at Chiefs -1 but their moneyline price slimmed to -115, the closest to a pick'em we'd seen. The total also ticked down to 48.5 due to the late money on the Under.
Sunday, February 9
After plenty of market movement, we're almost right back to where we started with both sides getting plenty of action. On the spread, 54% of the tickets and money are favoring the Eagles. However, 52% of the moneyline handle is backing the Chiefs, creating a fair bit of liability for sportsbooks due to the high amount of Chiefs futures tickets that bettors hold.
The Chiefs ML price of -120 and their spread of -1 are identical to the opening lines, while the O/U of 48.5 is only half a point higher than the opening number despite 74% of the handle coming in on the Over.
