The Montreal Canadiens have hit a rut offensively, scoring just six goals over the course of a four-game losing skid.

My Canadiens vs. Ducks predictions see the road team breaking out of its funk, with rookie Lane Hutson playing a prominent role in doing so.

Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for today's action.

Canadiens vs Ducks prediction

My Canadiens pick
Lane Hutson Over 0.5 points (-125 at BET99)

My Canadiens analysis
Lane Hutson’s had a remarkable rookie season to date. He has 39 points through 51 games and has consistently hit the score sheet along the way. His longest point drought of the season is four games, which just so happens to be the mark he’s sitting on right now.

He has a great opportunity to get back on track Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks. They've defended miserably all season long and aren’t showing any real signs of progress.

The Ducks rank Bottom 5 in shots, goals, and expected goals conceded during 5-on-5 play the past 10 games. They are a very exploitable team in that game state. The pace they play at only magnifies their issues. They rank second in pace on the season and first when isolating the past 10 games.

There's zero defense played by the Ducks at 5-on-5. Rightly or wrongly, they’re happy to throw caution to the wind and let the chips fall where they may.

Hutson should also have a real chance to flex his power-play prowess. The Ducks rank 27th in penalty kill percentage (74.1%) on the season, and their numbers in the past 10 games (75%) are equally as bad. This is truly a mouthwatering matchup across the board.

Anaheim’s goaltenders have performed well this season, combining to give the team the fifth-highest save percentage in the NHL. Even so, they still rank Bottom 10 in goals against per game and have allowed the sixth-most over the past 10 games.

Look for Hutson and the Canadiens’ offense to take advantage.

Canadiens vs Ducks same-game parlay (SGP)

Lane Hutson Over 0.5 points

Patrick Laine Over 2.5 shots

Over 5.5

Patrik Laine’s shot rates have dipped of late but that coincides with a big step up in class in terms of competition. Laine had to contend with teams like the Jets, Devils, Lightning, and Wild over the past five games.

The Ducks offer a great opportunity for Laine to get going again. They rank 31st in 5-on-5 shot suppression the past 10 games and take a lot of penalties. That means Laine should be able to bank on some power-play volume as well.

Laine had five shot attempts in just 13 minutes of ice when the two teams met in mid-December. With a heavier workload on his plate — Laine has averaged over 16 minutes the past 10 games — he should be able to pile up the shots against this porous Ducks defense.

Goals will likely be plentiful in this game. The Canadiens and Ducks both rank in the top half of the league in shot generation over the past 10 games and near the bottom in terms of preventing them.

Led by Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, Laine, and Hutson, the Canadiens have the firepower to capitalize on advantageous matchups. Meanwhile, the Ducks have quietly scored five or more in three of the past four games and are capable of threatening a defense missing stalwart Kaiden Guhle.
