The Vancouver Canucks took care of business in Boston on Tuesday night, picking up a shutout victory over the Bruins, and are in another great spot to get a result vs. the struggling Pittsburgh Penguins.
My Canucks vs. Penguins predictions see captain Quinn Hughes leading the charge and exploiting a defense that’s had issues all season long.
Let’s break things down further with my November 27 NHL picks ahead of the 7:30 p.m. puck drop on Sportsnet Pacific at PPG Paints Arena.
Canucks vs Penguins prediction
My Canucks pick
Quinn Hughes Over 2.5 shots on goal (-140 at Pinnacle)
My Canucks analysis
Quinn Hughes is as consistent as they come. He has averaged 3.4 shots per game this season and generated an unmatched level of volume, and not just by the standards of other defensemen.
The Vancouver Canucks blueliner has piled up 168 shot attempts on the season, trailing only Filip Forsberg and David Pastrnak league-wide.
As you’d expect, this kind of volume is leading to remarkable success. He's cleared 2.5 shots at a 64% clip on the year and registered at least two shots on target in 18 consecutive games.
It doesn’t matter whether Hughes is at home or on the road. It doesn’t matter if he is facing a good team or a bad one. He’s routinely clearing his line and giving himself a legitimate shot — no pun intended — even when he doesn’t.
Hughes has put up some big shot numbers in recent smash spots, including nine combined shots on 21 attempts against the two New York teams. The Pittsburgh Penguins are every bit as good of a matchup, if not better.
The Penguins rank 29th in 5v5 shot suppression on the year and play at the league’s second-fastest pace. Hughes has recorded 51 more shot attempts than the closest Canuck during 5v5 play so it stands to reason he’ll be the biggest beneficiary.
The positional matchup is very favorable as well, as only four teams have allowed more shots per game to defensemen than the Penguins.
Hughes should have plenty of space to operate and threaten from the backend in this game. Expect him to take full advantage.
Canucks vs Penguins Odds analysis
This line has moved towards the Penguins since opening, with Canucks backers now available to trade at a -114 price tag. This is likely a byproduct of the Canucks playing in a back-to-back situation with third-string netminder Arthurs Silovs set to get the nod in goal.
Vancouver has gotten the better of Pittsburgh in recent history, winning three of the last five meetings. Four of those games were decided by just a goal, with overtime necessary on two occasions.
We generally see a lot of offense when these teams square off as four straight meetings have featured seven goals or more
