The Vancouver Canucks appear to be moving in the right direction. They’ve won three of their past four games, with a road date against the powerhouse Stars serving as the lone blemish in that span.

My Red Wings vs. Canucks predictions see the home side continuing to build on its improved form, with Elias Pettersson taking center stage. Let’s break things down further with my February 2 NHL picks.

Canucks vs Red Wings prediction

My Canucks pick
Elias Pettersson Over 0.5 assists (+133 at Pinnacle)

My Canucks analysis
Elias Pettersson has recorded an assist in three consecutive games. His high-end playmaking figures to be on display once again Sunday night against Detroit.

Pettersson is projected to continue skating on a line with Jake DeBrusk and Brock Boeser, two guys well-equipped to get the most out of Pettersson’s passing ability. DeBrusk leads the Canucks in scoring with 18 goals and is well on his way to setting a new career high in that category.

Boeser is tucked in right behind DeBrusk with 16 goals through 44 games, and his shot has been his calling card since the day he stepped into the NHL.

We've not seen Pettersson shoot the puck much this season, as he’s averaging just 4.0 attempts per game, down from 5.1 a year ago. The dip has been even more evident of late; Pettersson has just 31 attempts over the past 10 games.

Given his linemates, Pettersson will surely be looking to continue creating goals for teammates rather than taking the shots himself. It’s also worth noting he's piled up the assists at an absurd rate in the absence of J.T. Miller.

Pettersson has played 11 games this season without Miller in the lineup. He's piled up 14 assists in that span, including four multi-assist performances.

The Detroit Red Wings have not defended well of late, ranking 28th in expected goals allowed in the past 10 games. They’ve been especially weak in penalty-killing situations, ranking Bottom 5 in every major category during that span.

Pettersson is a key facilitator on the man advantage and may have even more on his plate if Quinn Hughes is unable to suit up. Detroit is also in a tough schedule spot, playing a road back-to-back against a Canucks squad that's played once since Wednesday.

Canucks vs Red Wings odds analysis

The Canucks opened -150 favorites and have taken a ton of money since, seeing their odds blow up to a -164 price point. That line could shift either way depending on the health status of Quinn Hughes.

We've seen a little bit of movement on the total, with the line shifting towards the Over of 5.5. The line has moved four cents and is now trading at -110 O / -102 U.

Detroit is giving up a lot defensively, while Vancouver ranks 28th in team save percentage over the past 10 games, likely giving cause for the move.
