After coming away winless on a quick 2-game road trip, it doesn't get any easier for the Vancouver Canucks as they welcome in a sizzling Ottawa Senators side to Rogers Arena.
However, even with Ottawa riding a 5-game win streak and Vancouver posting just three wins in its last nine, the books have the Canucks as -130 favorites in the NHL odds.
Our Canucks analysis, however, is eyeing a slumping Vancouver forward coming alive against a team he's fared well against of late.
Read on for my Canucks vs. Senators predictions and NHL picks for Saturday, December 21.
Canucks vs Senators prediction
My Canucks pick
Jake DeBrusk Over 0.5 points (-120 at Pinnacle)
My Canucks analysis
After a sizzling start to the year, Jake DeBrusk has cooled off in a big way. The Vancouver Canucks forward has been held off the scoresheet in four straight games, tying his longest drought this season.
He was also a -2 last game when Vancouver dropped a 3-1 decision to the Vegas Golden Knights.
A visit from the Ottawa Senators could be the spark he needs to get back onto the scoresheet.
DeBrusk, who came over in the offseason from the Bruins, had one of his best games of the season in a 4-3 win in Ottawa on November 23rd, scoring two goals and adding one assist.
He's been a consistent contributor against Ottawa of late: in his last 10 games against the Senators (nine of those with the Bruins), he has six goals and 10 points.
Part of his success is shooting the puck. DeBrusk has exactly one shot on goal in each of the last four games. In his last 10 against Ottawa, he was held under two shots in a game just three times, and had three or more shots five times.
Getting back to Rogers Arena might help, too. Although he was held off the scoresheet in the final two games of Vancouver's six-game homestand, DeBrusk had already done some damage, scoring three goals – giving him a team-leading 14 on the year – and six points.
The Canucks and Senators are tied in the middle of the pack in goal-scoring at 3.09 per contest.
For Vancouver to break out of its current slump, a contribution from their top goal-scorer would be helpful.
He has enticing +208 odds to score an anytime goal Saturday night and +195 odds to pick up an assist.
Breaking the goose egg in any way does pay out slightly less, but it is a win nonetheless.
