The Calgary Flames exited the holiday break the same way they entered it: with a multi-goal win. However, they’ll have no time to rest on their laurels as they’re right back in action Sunday against a dangerous Vegas Golden Knights team that has been dominant on home soil.
My Flames vs. Golden Knights predictions see one of Calgary’s top young players making his presence felt in what could be a high-scoring game.
Let’s take a closer look with my NHL picks for Sunday, December 29.
Flames vs Golden Knights prediction
My Flames pick
Matthew Coronato Over 0.5 points (+120 at BET99)
My Flames analysis
Matthew Coronato is in good form offensively. He's picked up six points over his past five games, hitting the scoresheet in all but Saturday’s win over San Jose.
He is skating on a line with Mikael Backlund and Blake Coleman at 5v5. That trio has meshed well together, controlling the run of play against the opposition on most nights. With that line on the ice, the Calgary Flames have generated 72 shot attempts per 60 minutes while conceding 57.
They are spending a lot of time in the offensive zone and generating more shots and opportunities than they’re giving up. That’s generally a good recipe to get results and we’re seeing that. Through 170 minutes together, this line has scored twice as many goals as they’ve given up.
What I like about Coronato, in particular, is that he also skates on the top power play unit. Although the Flames tend to balance their power plays more than most teams, Coronato’s unit tends to get a little more runway each night.
That’s important to note as the Vegas Golden Knights are nothing special on the penalty kill, ranking 18th in PK% over the past 10 games. Ilya Samsonov getting the nod in goal for Vegas is a nice bonus. He owns an .898 SV% on the season and is sporting a GAA just a hair under 3.00.
The Flames should be able to score their fair share against him, giving Coronato a good chance of finding the scoresheet.
Flames vs Golden Knights same-game parlay (SGP)
Rasmus Andersson is on a shooting heater. He’s recorded multiple shots in eight of his last nine games, attempting about 4.5 per night in that span.
This includes multi-shot performances against high-end teams like the Lightning, Stars, Panthers, and Bruins. It’s not as if he’s inflating his totals against the worst defensive teams in the league.
Averaging nearly 25 minutes per game, Andersson will log more than enough ice to generate a couple of shots.
Vegas has averaged 3.5 goals per game and generated shots at a Top-3 clip over their last 10. The Flames rank Top 10 in both shots and goals over the same period.
With both teams in good form offensively, and starting backups, there should be a healthy amount of goals coming.
