The Edmonton Oilers have won two in a row, and they’ll look to make it three in a row with a win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Monday, October 28.
While it was a bit of a rocky start for Edmonton, everything is beginning to click, and our Oilers vs. Blue Jackets predictions and NHL picks are calling for Oil goalie Stuart Skinner to turn in another solid showing tonight.
Oilers vs Blue Jackets prediction
My Oilers pick
Stuart Skinner Under 2.5 goals against (-135 at BET99)
My Oilers analysis
Edmonton Oilers No. 1 goalie Stuart Skinner is coming off a 27-save shutout after a poor start to the season, and the Columbus Blue Jackets sport a second-ranked 14.5 team shooting percentage at 5-on-5 that’s unsustainably high.
The Oil have once again been a dominant 5-on-5 club with a second-ranked 58.6 Corsi For percentage and sixth-ranked 56.0 expected goals percentage.
Edmonton has also allowed just 2.13 goals per 60 minutes at 5-on-5 through nine games, and ranking last in the league with a 60.0 penalty-kill percentage isn't going to last long. Improvement is coming in short order while shorthanded.
Additionally, even with the shutout, Skinner’s .890 SV% and 3.06 GAA are still well off his .910 and 2.67 marks across 122 appearances in the previous three years. Simply put, his best is yet to come.
Returning to the Blue Jackets, they can’t hang with the Oilers at 5-on-5. In addition to the team shooting percentage that’s set to plummet, Columbus sports an 18th-ranked 49.5 CF% and 23rd-ranked 47.2 xGF%. I’m also anticipating the possession rank to drop moving forward.
Columbus has lost the possession battle in three of its past four games with a 47.7 CF% at 5-on-5, and the outlier was against a flat Maple Leafs team playing the second leg of a back-to-back spot with travel.
I’m anticipating a solid night from Skinner, Edmonton tilting the ice in its favor most of the game, and the puck luck to begin drying up for Columbus.
Oilers vs Blue Jackets same-game parlay (SGP)
It’s been a slow start for Oilers winger Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
He’s picked up just four points and 1.39 points per 60 minutes through nine games despite logging a healthy 19:13 of ice time per game, including 3:35 with the man advantage. RNH recorded 2.56 points per 60 last year, and Columbus has surrendered a healthy 3.34 goals per game.
Point night is always in the cards for the Edmonton stars, too.
Turning to Blue Jackets No. 1 center Sean Monahan, I’m expecting him to see consistent matchups opposite Oilers superstars Connor McDavid and/or Leon Draisaitl, and that’s not a recipe for success.
McDavid sports a dominant 62.3 CF% and 60.9 xGF% at 5-on-5, and Draisaitl has been even better with 64.8% and 65.7% marks. And as noted, I’m also anticipating the Oilers tidying up their penalty kill.
