Oilers vs Bruins Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NHL Game

The Boston Bruins will be no match for the red-hot Edmonton Oilers as Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl will look to take full advantage of that to make sure that the home team in tonight's matchup will continue to struggle.

The Edmonton Oilers will look to keep the good times rolling against the struggling Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Tuesday, January 7.

Edmonton superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have put the league on notice during a scorching 25-game stretch, and my top NHL picks and Oilers vs. Bruins predictions expect the one-two punch to have their say in Beantown again tonight.

My Oilers analysis

The Edmonton Oilers are rolling along an 18-5-2 heater and have won three straight. Edmonton ranks inside the Top 10 in each of five-on-five Corsi For percentage, goals for percentage and expected goals for percentage, and superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl have been a one-two offensive wrecking crew.

McDavid’s 44 points through those 25 games pace the NHL, and Drasaitl’s 43 are second. Of course, the German center is also leading the league with 20 goals during the stretch.

The bad news for the Boston Bruins is that Edmonton bench boss Kris Knoblauch hasn’t had to lean on playing his two superstars together to generate 5-on-5 offense, either.

It makes the Oilers incredibly difficult to match up against, and I’m anticipating Boston coach Joe Sacco prioritizing defensive attention to detail tonight, which will in turn limit the quality scoring opportunities for the Bruins.

Plus, the Bruins have lost five of six out of the holiday break, and they’re also playing their third game in four nights.

Interestingly, the slide has primarily been the result of horrific special teams, with the Bruins failing to score a power-play goal and allowing four while shorthanded for a 63.6 penalty-kill percentage.

The problem is that Edmonton has posted elite special-teams numbers during the highlighted heater with a fifth-ranked 28.6 power-play percentage and top-ranked 88.9 PK%,

Add Oil No. 1 Stuart Skinner going 12-3-2 during the run and entering with consecutive wins while stopping 53 of 56 shots (.946 save percentage), and I like Edmonton to win its fourth straight tonight.

Oilers moneyline

Under 6.0

Leon Draisaitl Over 2.5 shots

Edmonton has surrendered the fifth-fewest goals per game (2.56) during the noted 25-game run, and as discussed, I expect Boston to batten down the defensive hatches in an effort to keep this game close.

Additionally, prior to allowing four goals to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday, Boston No. 1 Jeremy Swayman had stopped 67 of 71 shots (.944 SV%) across his three starts out of the holiday break. I’m anticipating a bounce-back showing with the Bruins playing tighter defense in front of him.

Both teams have trended to the Under, too.

The Oilers have hit the Under in 59 of their last 110 games, and the Bruins have gone Under the number in 30 of their past 51 at home.

Turning to Draisaitl, he’s been one of the most consistent shooters in the league with three or more in 24 of 39 games, including in nine of the past 12.

Overall, Boston is an excellent shot-suppressing team, but Draisaitl is also an elite shooter and driver of possession. He sports a high-end 58.6 CF% at five-on-five while ranking in the 96th percentile of forwards in both shots on goal and even-strength offensive zone time.
