My Oilers analysis
Sure, it’s been a sluggish start for the Edmonton Oilers, but their 4.9 team shooting percentage at 5-on-5 and 6.7 power-play percentage are both unsustainably low. More goals are coming.

Additionally, the Carolina Hurricanes roster isn’t in the same class as years past. They’re not as deep in the middle six or on the blue line, and I expect them to struggle to slow down Edmonton. The Oilers beefed up their supporting cast, and in addition to the inevitable improved shooting efficiency, more saves are also coming.

Edmonton No. 1 Stuart Skinner posted a middling .905 SV% with 0.04 goals saved above average per 60 minutes during a down 2023-24 season, so his .851 and -0.01 marks have positive regression ahead. I also believe he can rebound all the way back to his .913 and .024 form from his first two years in the league.

Carolina is the fancy stats darling, but their .993 PDO at 5-on-5 is close to the even mark, while Edmonton is 28th at .941. The Oilers also trail only the Hurricanes in both Corsi For percentage and expected goals percentage, and I value Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch having the advantage of last change to give superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl preferred on-ice matchups.

Oilers vs Hurricanes same-game parlay (SGP)

Oilers moneyline

Under 6.5

Jeff Skinner Over 2.5 shots

As noted, I’m expecting improvement from Skinner, and these teams are tied for the fifth-fewest expected goals against per 60 minutes (2.18) while ranking first and second in CF% at 5-on-5. Additionally, while the scoring uptick is coming for the Oilers, I’m not anticipating it coming all at once against the defensively sound and well-coached Hurricanes.

Oil winger Jeff Skinner has recorded 3+ shots in five of six games this season, and he’s sporting a high-end 58.7 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5. He's receiving consistent top-six minutes and skating with the No. 2 power-play unit, and he frequently traded with a 3.5-shot total in previous years.
