The Edmonton Oilers beefed up their supporting cast of forwards during the offseason, and it finally paid off, with the Oil winning their first game of the season last time out. Edmonton hits the highway for its first road game against the Nashville Predators on Thursday, October 17.
Our Oilers vs. Predators predictions and NHL picks are calling for first-year Edmonton winger Jeff Skinner to put pucks on net early and often against Nashville.
Oilers vs Predators prediction
My Oilers best bet
Jeff Skinner Over 2.5 shots (+100 at BET99)
My analysis
The Edmonton Oilers snapped a three-game losing streak, and winger Jeff Skinner picked up an assist and recorded 3+ shots for the third time in four games during Tuesday’s 4-3 win over the Flyers.
Skinner has been jumping all over the Oil lineup, with the bulk of his ice time coming in a middle-six role alongside fellow veterans Adam Henrique and Connor Brown against Philly.
Edmonton head coach Kris Knoblauch has the luxury of having a lot of moving pieces at his disposal, and Skinner has also seen time with both Edmonton superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl at 5-on-5 to start the year. It’s also sort of a win-win situation, too.
Jumping the boards with McDavid or Draisaitl is a boon to Skinner’s offensive upside and shooting opportunities. Still, he’ll also avoid going opposite the top Nashville Predators if he sticks with Henrique and Brown.
Regardless of linemates, Skinner’s a high-volume shooter with a team-high 15.64 shots and 30.24 attempts per 60 minutes through four games, and he’s been on the ice for an elite 62.4 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5. He posted a team-high 75.0 CF% against the Flyers on Tuesday, too.
Oilers vs Predators same-game parlay (SGP)
Despite the 1-3 start, the Oilers pace the league with a 62.1 CF% and rank third with a 57.0 expected goals percentage at 5-on-5. Additionally, Edmonton still has positive regression ahead of its 4.67 team shooting percentage at 5-on-5 and 11.1 power-play percentage.
No. 1 goalie Stuart Skinner has also improved in back-to-back starts, and I expect him to quickly turn his .845 SV% and 4.43 GAA into above-average marks. Edmonton has allowed the seventh-fewest expected goals per 60 minutes (2.2) at 5-on-5, after all.
Another step forward from Skinner and more of the same from the Oilers in front of him paves the way for a quiet night for Nashville.
