The Ottawa Senators have quietly won four out of their last five games, and tonight, they'll be playing the second leg of a back-to-back.

Ottawa went into Carolina last night, winning 3-0, and my Senators vs. Penguins predictions expect the Canadian squad to pick up another two points against Pittsburgh.

Read all about it in my NHL picks for December 14.

My Senators analysis
The Ottawa Senators have needed Shane Pinto to get going after what has been a quiet start to the season, but last night, he was able to tally two goals in their 3-0 win.

Offensively, the Senators have been carried by the same three guys for the majority of the season: Tim Stutzle, Drake Batherson, and Brady Tkachuk, who all have north of 30 points thus far.

Scoring goals hasn’t been a concern for this team, but getting secondary scoring is something every squad with playoff aspirations needs if they want to achieve that goal.

Over the past five games, Ottawa has been getting contributions from players down the lineup and even some blueliners, such as Nick Jensen, who has four points during this span.

What’s been most impressive about the Senators over their last five games is their goaltending, and while that’s mostly thanks to Linus Ullmark, it's more probable than not Anton Forsberg will be in goal.

Forsberg’s last start was not a pretty one, so he seeks redemption this evening after allowing three goals on 12 shots against the New York Islanders on December 8.

Forsrberg’s numbers this season haven’t been all that impressive, but that doesn’t concern me for this matchup this evening. He has a record of 4-6-0 with a .889 SV% and a 2.95 GAA, but the team in front of him has been defending well, allowing only 10.35 high-danger chances per game.

The Senators have only allowed seven goals in their last five contests, and despite the fact they played last night, they should be able to control the pace of play against the Pittsburgh Penguins

Senators vs Penguins odds analysis

The current total for this matchup is 6.5, and that line reflects the Penguins' recent scoring output. Pittsburgh has scored 18 goals in its last four games and nine in its most recent contest against the Montreal Canadiens.

Pittsburgh is one of the worst defensive teams in the league, so the Senators forwards like Stutzle, Tkachuk, and Batherson should be able to generate some quality scoring chances.

Tristan Jarry should get the nod tonight for the Penguins, and his numbers are nothing to write home about as well. Jarry has skated to a record of 6-4-1 with a .884 SV% and a 3.65 GAA.

There should be a ton of goal-scoring in this one tonight.
