New Mexico State should look to dictate the pace early and force Sam Houston out of its comfort zone. With the Aggies playing faster and the Bearkats sporting a one-dimensional offense, the road favorite has an opportunity to seize control early against a defense that has had plenty of time to prepare.
Sam Houston and New Mexico State could deliver an ugly offensive showing, and not because either defense is particularly impressive. The Bearkats are averaging just 11.6 points per game, while the Aggies are scoring fewer than 20 points per contest. With both offenses struggling to move the ball, the under is worth a look, but the total has dropped too far already.
James Madison is 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS, with a +14.4 spread differential, and despite being on the road, I'm happy to lay the number against App State. The Dukes rank 13th in the nation in yards per carry (5.3) and should run the ball well against an App State defense that allows 155 rushing yards per game (73rd). The Mountaineers don't have anything to hang their hat on offensively, ranking 74th in yards per play and 106th in yards per carry. If JMU can make them one-dimensional on offense, they'll find the necessary separation on the scoreboard.
Great number to get in and get out with the Memphis Tigers in the first half. This will mark East Carolina’s toughest test since facing Alabama in Week 1, when the Pirates were 27.5-point underdogs. That was also the last time East Carolina was a double-digit underdog.
Memphis’ defense should make life hell for this inferior East Carolina offense, while the Tigers’ offense should give the Pirates’ defense plenty of problems of its own on Thursday night.
I’m expecting Memphis to control this game, forcing East Carolina to play catch-up and rely on an inefficient passing attack. The Tigers’ ability to generate takeaways and pressure the quarterback should limit the Pirates’ scoring opportunities, making the under an appealing play in what could be a one-sided affair.
Expect a clock-draining first half when Duke and Virginia meet. Both offenses lean heavily on the run and rank among the slower teams in seconds per play, particularly over their first three drives. Long possessions, limited urgency and plenty of punts should help keep the clock moving and the scoring down.
Duke and Virginia should lean on their ground games, keeping the clock moving in a matchup featuring two solid defensive units. The Blue Devils' ability to shut down the run could force Virginia into uncomfortable passing situations, while the Cavaliers' secondary could give Duke problems through the air.
Under 54.5 is playable up to 55.5. Army plays at the nation's slowest pace, while both teams should lean on long possessions. Tulsa's last two similar matchups closed below 48, making this number look inflated by recent Overs.
In four of Stanford's last five FBS games, it has allowed 35+ points. NC State's offense is a little sporadic, so I'd only play its team total Over up to 32.5, but it has an opportunity to light up the Cardinal. QB CJ Bailey has put up a 72+ QBR in four of his last five games and has the Wolfpack ranked top 40 in pass success rate (47.6%).
These teams are combined 9-4 to the Over this season, but I'd only take the Over at 55.5 or better. Stanford's defense is one of the worst in the country, ranking 127th nationally in success rate (50.1%). NC State has the talent to take advantage, especially with its passing attack. But the Wolfpack defense is similarly terrible (124th in net EPA per play) and should help the Over hit.
My power ratings make Kansas a 1-point favorite here, one of the biggest disparities of the week. First, pay attention to the market. Baylor opened as a 6.5-point favorite vs. TCU last week. They closed only a 3.5-point favorite. Baylor would lose the game outright 17-6 and were -1.4 in yards per play. For the season, Kansas is +1.0 in yards-per-play margin while Baylor is +0.7, and Kansas has played the slightly tougher schedule, according to Jeff Sagarin. When you have the better team in the stats that has played the tougher schedule, that usually signifies a best bet, especially when the team you're backing is a home underdog.
My power ratings make Kansas a slight favorite. Kansas is better in yards per play margin and has faced a tougher schedule than Baylor... and they're getting points... at home? That's an auto bet for me. The market was anti Baylor last week, and they got beat outright as a favorite vs TCU. Money came in on Kansas last week and I expect the same this week.
My power ratings make Virginia Tech a 1-point favorite, again one of biggest disparities of the week. Since the start of the season, I have downgraded Clemson’s power rating by 8.5 points. That’s the second-biggest downgrade among Power Four teams behind only Oregon. Virginia Tech has been significantly better in the stats, as they are outgaining their opponents by 135 yards per game while Clemson is only outgaining their opponents by 10 yards per game. Virginia Tech’s defense does not get enough credit in the market. Virginia Tech is No. 1 in stuff rate, No. 1 in tackles for loss, and No. 2 in Havoc. They're taking on a Clemson team that has the worst starting quarterback in the Power Four. True freshman Tait Reynolds is No. 127 in QBR. He leads a Clemson offense that ranks No. 127 in EPA/Play and No. 126 in success rate.
My power ratings only make USC a one-point favorite. USC finally got a big win on the east coast, beating Penn State, but reality is, Wisconsin is better than Penn State, and yet the Penn State - USC line was a pick, so I think this line is a market overreaction. Wisconsin is also better in yards per play margin and they've faced a tough schedule.
Texas should be favored by more than a field goal at home against Ole Miss, and I'd take the Longhorns up to -5.5. Despite Arch Manning's inconsistent play, Texas has the talent advantage, especially on defense. The Longhorns rank third nationally in net adjusted EPA per play on defense and can slow Trinidad Chambliss enough to win decisively.
Ole Miss has returned to top form since its early-October bye week, winning by 35 at Vanderbilt before dominating ranked Missouri 31-3 on Saturday. Meanwhile, Texas has lost back-to-back games against teams not as good as Ole Miss, and Arch Manning concerns now have the entire program in flux at a bad time. I expect a bit of a shootout, and that plays into the hands of the Rebels, who rank 10th in scoring offense and 20th in yards per play. This Longhorns offense (89th in yards per play) won't be able to keep pace in its current state.
This could be the best G6 game of the season, and with major CFP implications, I like New Mexico to cover -4.5 or better. The Lobos have the best defense in the G6, ranking first nationally in havoc rate (26%), and home-field advantage in Albuquerque will be huge after Jason Eck's push to try to sell it out. North Dakota State has been impressive, but its inconsistent offense (7 points against UNLV) will be a problem against the Lobos.
Although Utah struggled to close out its win against Colorado last week, I like the Utes up to -9.5 at home with College GameDay in Salt Lake City. The Cougars are coming off a big shootout win and are in a letdown spot against a Utah team with an offense and defense both ranked top 20 by SP+. Houston's poor defensive play (111th in net EPA per play) is bound to catch up to it against Devon Dampier.

Betting on a moneyline simply means you're picking the outright winner of the game, regardless of the scoring margin or total. If the team you choose wins, then your bet hits. Here's what it will look like over at your favorite sportsbook:
| Team | Moneyline |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | -120 |
| Missouri Tigers | +150 |
In this case, Alabama is favored to win the game as its moneyline odds have a minus sign (-) in front of the number. The favorites will have the minus sign present, and the underdogs will have a plus sign (+). Easy, right?
Betting the spread gives your bet a bit more breathing room. Here, you don't need to sweat out a team to win. Instead, you can wager on the point differential on the scoreboard.
Betting on the spread is a good idea when the moneyline profits aren't enticing. There's no point betting on Alabama as a heavy -1500 favorite over Missouri. But taking Missouri to keep the scoring margin within a certain frame will get you more bang for your buck.
| Team | Spread |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | -24.5 (-105) |
| Missouri Tigers | +24.5 (-115) |
In this example, the Tide are favored to dominate their game against Missouri, outperforming them by at least 24.5 points.
If Alabama does win by more than 25 points, that would mean the Crimson Tide covered the spread. But if the Tide won by just 20 points, then that would mean the Tigers "covered the spread" instead.
If you think the outcome of a game could flip in either direction, then an Over/Under is the way to go. This bet relies on the combined score from both teams and whether it goes Over or Under the point total listed at sportsbooks. Then, who cares who wins?
| Team | Total |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | O 52.5 (-110) |
| Missouri Tigers | U 52.5 (-110) |
In this example, oddsmakers have set the total score for the game at 52.5 points. The choice is now up to you. If you think the Tide and Tigers will score a combined total of more than 52.5 points, 53 points or more, then pick the Over. If you're thinking otherwise, then bet the Under, and the bet will hit if they score fewer than 52.5 points.
If the set number was a whole number like 52 points and the two teams score exactly that amount, then it is considered a push and you'd get your money back.
