I'm back.
Thinking about grampy.
One time he had the platoon. Everyone dug in. Forest. One guy wanted a view after stuck in a ditch for a couple days. He climbed a tree. The whistle of incoming artillery came in... it hit his buddy in the tree directly. Everything covered in blood
He cried again.
He told me about dieppe once. He had friends that landed. 8000 landed, 2000 came back. The prisoners they executed. We landed on dday and we got behind the coastal gins in dieppe. He said there was no prisoners when when took those guns. Let' em burn or revenge. He never said what the end was, only that there was no prisoners. Then the march to Berlin continued.

I was thinking about grampy tonight. I remembered reading your comment DBW, many years ago. It made me smile and I know it made him smile too. Years ago and I still think about what you said. I wanted you to know that. He had so many stories of the horror and joy. Watched band of brothers with him once. He knew what happened before it happened and he lived it all, those were his brothers. We can never forget. He crossed that river his pal died on, never told me which one, lugging the 25 pounder, our big gun. Halfway there the shells started to fall, incoming mail he would say, then he would whistle the sound of the shells. Boat got hit, gun sunk, swam to the enemy shore with nothing but his gun. Sargent then asked where our artillery was, it's me he said :) Then he got to the forest. Tired, dirty and wanting the war to end. The germans blew a dam hoping to flood us out. Didnt work but 2 feet of water everywhere. He said he spent a day on his wet feet and then got a chance to sleep on top of a tank, the only dry place. And then it got cold. He hated that forest. He died before Twitter, but he would tell me about the telegrams. He got 200 characters to send back to grandma. It would take a couple days to arrive, a little message for your love. I hope the war ends soon, I'm still alive. Grandma had a scrapbook to save them all. I thought I would share some stories. I'll share some more. I'd be delighted if some else wanted to share. God bless, S

A billion seconds ago it was 1959. Not true. It was 1985. I only know this because everyone I know celebrated their billionth second alive by getting super drunk. A billion seconds is 31.7 years. |

What do you think?
Maybe the Germans would have won. I doubt they could hold all of Eurasia but they could have. Would they have crossed the ocean to capture North America? There might not be communism. America wouldn't have 15 aircraft carriers fighting everyone who looks at them funny. France and Spain would be speaking German. Wall street and N.A.S.A. could have been in Canada or not exist at all. There would be no football! No Russian vodka. No UN. The only certainty is America would not be the King if Japan didn't kick them in the face and enrage them for 70+ years. |

Ww2, france, poker game, 10pm. Game of cards with a full table. The call comes in for ammo and grampy and his buddy have rock paper sissors for the run. Grampy won, his buddy left and the krauts hit him with artillery. His money never left the table.
Lose and you die, win and you never forget. |

My grampa served in ww2, artillery, 25 pounder, day 2. He got shot in the a$$ by a tank that busted through the line, they thought he was dead and overran the guns.
He would always tell me of the civilians they met. You meet a woman and child with no food, no house, no hope. Any minute they could be raped, killed or worse. There was no better feeling than giving your rations, cutting some wood, or even giving a chocolate bar to them. A woman and starving child, would you walk by? No. You give them anything you can, and grampy did. He saw the german women with shaved heads as we took germany. and he came upon the death camps.Every time he would tell the story he would cry. His best friend was killed in the invasion. Another killed by the artillery, another from that damned river crossing he would always talk about..,,, So much death. Everywhere death. But to help the ones still alive. I dont like the fact everyone wants to come here either, but the more i think, the more i see. Do you want to tell that woman and child that you have no food, you cant help her baby? How much do you think they would love you if you said come inside, here is some soup, and a blanket for your baby? They would never forget you, they are not terrorists, they are like you and me living on this rock trying to survive. Maybe the best place is not a military base, but the goal is well worth the cost. You can say no sitting where you are but the guy who actually has to stand face to face with these people and say no, after we blew up their country and destablized everything. If i had the choice i would sneak that 5 year old and his mother back with me rather then leaving them to starve and die. God bless our armed forces! God speed, S |

I watched the game when stl had no center fielder and they still beat the cubs. The guy had to toss the ball to the other fielder to throw it back in.
We will see tommorro. Good luck to all. Just don't lay -270. |
