Athletics vs Mets Prediction, Picks & Odds for Today’s MLB Game

The Mets have covered the run line in their last eight victories and with more advantages in Thursday's game, we expect that trend to continue.

The New York Mets came out of their offensive funk with a 9-1 victory over the Oakland A's on Wednesday, and I'll be targeting them with my A's vs. Mets predictions once more on Thursday.

The two clubs have already scored 23 runs in this series and my MLB picks expect that trend to continue this afternoon.

Athletics vs Mets prediction

My best bet
Mets -1.5 (+118 at FanDuel)

My analysis
The New York Mets bats came alive Wednesday night, scoring nine runs to level their three-game set with the Oakland A's.

That’s a good sign because their offense has been a mess of late; the Metropolitans scored more runs Wednesday night than they had across their past four games combined. They need to keep that up today if they wish to win an NL Wild Card spot.

Veteran lefty Jose Quintana gets the nod for the Mets. He’s riding the same teeter-totter as the Mets offense has; he’s coming off a rough pair of away starts but he seems to pitch better at home (3-4, 3.38), with nine earned runs allowed across his previous 28 2/3 home frames.

Quintana could catch a break because the Oakland sticks are just as inconsistent as he is; the A’s have scored 20 runs across their past five but 17 were scored in two games. Oakland’s feast-or-famine offense doesn’t fare well against lefties — they boast a high strikeout rate (23%) and their 27th-best .271 BABIP doesn’t lend much confidence.

Quintana and the Mets’ pitching staff should hold the A’s sticks at bay, and the Mets have a good opportunity to score runs this afternoon as Oakland starter Mitch Spence has surrendered 19 earned runs across his past 26 1/3 away games.

This might get sweaty, but playing the Mets run line is the best value on the board. The Mets are barely above .500 at Citi Field, but Oakland is the second-worst away club in baseball. NY has covered the run line in eight consecutive victories and that trend should continue behind Quintana today.

Athletics vs Mets same-game parlay (SGP)

Mets -1.5

Mitch Spence 2+ walks allowed

Over 8.5

I like the Mets to roll today but I also like a high-scoring affair with Spence having command issues this afternoon. The Mets boast a high walk rate against righties (9%), which could be problematic as Spence has issued 2+ walks in four of his last five starts and 2.58 walks per nine away from home.

I like the potential for a high-scoring affair today. Both offenses hit the long ball — Oakland ranks fifth (153) while N.Y. ranks sixth (149).  These offenses could tee off today as Spence surrenders 1.79 dingers and Quintana allows 2.05 bombs per nine innings.
