The Los Angeles Dodgers snuck by the St. Louis Cardinals in a dramatic 7-6 victory on Friday thanks to a late homer by Kevin Kiermaier, re-establishing their upward trajectory after a couple of losses in Milwaukee.
Now, they’ll hand the ball to youngster Bobby Miller in the hopes of clinching a much-needed series win to maintain their lead in the NL West. My Dodgers vs. Cardinals predictions expect the offenses to be kept at bay early in this one, especially with the surprisingly effective Andre Pallante taking the bump for St. Louis.
Let's get into both pitchers in our MLB picks for Saturday, August 17.
Dodgers vs Cardinals prediction
My best bet
First three innings Under 2.5 (+106 at FanDuel)
My analysis
It's safe to say that the Andre Pallante experiment is going well for the St. Louis Cardinals. With injuries to their starters, Pallante was moved from the bullpen to the rotation and now owns a 3.88 ERA in his new role across 12 outings.
The right-hander owns a 3.00 ERA through the first three innings of games, and when opponents have faced him the first time through the order, they’ve hit just .180 with an incredibly-low .431 OPS.
Although the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup looks to be a lot stronger now that Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts have returned in recent weeks, they’ve still been highly volatile and rank eighth in wRC+ over the last week of play. On the road this season, the Dodgers have scored just two runs on average in the first four innings.
That has me excited to take a look at the early part of this one. While Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller hasn’t had his A-stuff this season, he opened up his sophomore campaign in March against St. Louis and posted his best line of the year, striking out 11 across six scoreless frames.
The Cardinals are struggling to hit for power right now, and that's going to be hard to turn around at the ever-so-spacious Busch Stadium. With Miller’s propensity for ground balls and his strong start against this team earlier in the year, I’m confident in taking the Under for the first three innings.
Dodgers vs Cardinals same-game parlay (SGP)
One man who might have some success against Miller is Masyn Winn, who has hit .342 against ground-ball arms like Miller. The Cardinals shortstop has stepped to the plate five times in seven of the 13 games he’s played this month and has now recorded three hits in his last two games.
We’ll also look to Teoscar Hernandez here, given he’s gone 3-for-4 with a double and a homer off of Pallante in his career. With some added lineup protection, the Dodgers slugger should see plenty to hit.
