Rockies vs Angels Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s MLB Game

The Angels' lineup lacks much talent, but leadoff hitter Nolan Schanuel finds himself on a bit of a heater. That should continue tonight against the awful Rockies.

The finale of tonight's five-game slate features the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Angels squaring off at Angel Stadium.

Neither team is exactly lighting the world on fire — unlike fans of these teams who are probably lighting jerseys on fire — but my Rockies vs. Angels predictions are backing L.A. leadoff hitter Nolan Schanuel to make an impact.

Find out why in my MLB picks for August 1.

My analysis
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Ryan Feltner has yet to find much success in the Big Leagues, sporting a 5.59 career ERA. His 4.99 ERA this year is actually his most effective campaign.

He pitches to contact with a 20.6% K rate while ranking in the 26th percentile in chase rate (26.2%). There’s nothing special about the contact he allows as he ranks in the 31st percentile in xBA (.257), so opposing batters have every opportunity to collect base knocks against the 27-year-old.

Feltner has notable splits, allowing left-handed batters to hit .286 against him while getting roughed up for a 1.51 WHIP, 4.38 FIP, and 4.41 FIP.

The Los Angeles Angels aren’t exactly known for their offensive prowess, but they have a few left-handed bats in the lineup who set up for a good day at the office. One of those is leadoff man Nolan Schanuel, who has impressed with a 107 wRC+ and .324 wOBA in his age 22 season.

The FAU product was fast-tracked to the Show after being taken 11th overall in the 2023 MLB Draft. He destroyed Minor League pitching with a 161 wRC+ in 17 games at AA, and the Halos need all the help they can get right now.

Schanuel hits RHP well with a 113 wRC+ and .331 wOBA. If we isolate for home games, those numbers jump to a 122 wRC+ and .344 wOBA.

He avoids strikeouts (16.7% K rate), ranking in the 91st percentile in chase rate (20.5%) and the 95th percentile in whiff rate. Since Feltner pitches to contact, Schanuel should have plenty of opportunities to collect hits.

The Halos' leadoff man has scored nine runs in his last eight games, has collected 12 hits in his last 10, and has recorded 14 total bases in his last five. To put it succinctly, he’s in fine form.

The prop on him to record Over 1.5 Hits, Runs, and RBIs is enticing, considering he’s averaging 3.3 H+R+RBI across his last 10 games. Sign me up for the Over.

Rockies vs Angels same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 9

Nolan Schanuel Over 1.5 total bases

Ryan McMahon Over 1.5 total bases

This may seem like an uncorrelated SGP, so allow me to explain.

Feltner has been finding a groove, surrendering no more than two earned runs in five of his last six starts, and faces an Angels lineup with a 90 wRC+ (21st) and .299 wOBA (also 21st) against RHP since returning from the All-Star Break.

Carson Fulmer gets the call for the Halos as he transitions to the rotation. He posted a 2.70 ERA in relief a year ago and has a 3.77 ERA this year while ranking in the 76th percentile in xBA (.223).

This total is a high number considering neither lineup inspired much confidence. The Rockies don’t have many lefties to make Fulmer pay, and he’s held right-handed bats to a .179 BA.

One lefty who can make him pay is Ryan McMahon, who ranks in the 94th percentile in hard-hit percentage (51.7%) and the 95th percentile in average exit velocity (93.1 mph). He homered in Game 1 and doubled in Game 2 and sets up nicely again tonight.
