The Atlanta Hawks will look to solidify their playoff standing as they host the floundering Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday night.

Already teams that trended towards high-scoring games, Atlanta and Philadelphia have been putting up even bigger numbers lately, which is why I’m taking the Over in my 76ers vs. Hawks predictions.

Let’s look at what bettors can expect from tonight’s matchup in my free NBA picks for March 23.

76ers vs Hawks prediction

My best bet: Over 242 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis
Tonight’s total has been set at 242 points, well above the seasonal average of both teams. But looking at the way these teams are playing right now — and their current rosters — tells a different story.

The Philadelphia 76ers have not only his the Over in four straight games, but they’ve gone above tonight’s total in three of those games. The issue is primarily defensive, with Philadelphia having allowed an average of 132.5 ppg over their last four outings.

The 76ers have been one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA all season long, and are even worse now with several players out of the lineup, including Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey, among others. Yet those losses haven’t stopped Philadelphia from scoring points, even if they might have trouble slowing down many of the teams still alive in March Madness.

While most of their leading scorers may be out, Quentin Grimes has stepped up to lead the offense in a big way. Grimes is averaging 21.9 ppg in 19 games with the 76ers, and has scored at least 25 points in each of his last seven games, averaging an impressive 30.9 ppg in that stretch.

On the other side of the equation, the Atlanta Hawks have hit the Over in three straight games. For the most part, their offense has been successful at adjusting to their post-De’Andre Hunter lineup, averaging 122.2 ppg in the month of March.

Atlanta also plays at one of the fastest paces in the NBA, second only to the Memphis Grizzlies in most pace metrics. That naturally leads to higher-scoring games, and an unimposing defense has been an issue for the Hawks all season long. Teams are averaging 119.3 ppg against Atlanta this season, and the increased offensive output has only made up for that, not changed it.

Right now, these are two of the teams most inclined to play fast, high-scoring basketball in the NBA, and when they play each other, we can expect the points to pile up rapidly. The first meeting between these teams two weeks ago ended with 255 points scored, and we can expect a similar output tonight. I’m taking the Over.

76ers vs Hawks same-game parlay

 Over 241.5

Hawks -10.5

Trae Young Over 40.5 points + assists + rebounds

These teams should combine for a massive number of points tonight, and we can use that to build a same-game parlay as well. Along with the Over, I’m also taking the Hawks to cover the 10.5-point spread. The 76ers are playing with a shell of their roster right now, while Atlanta has been playing well lately, winning six of eight and covering in five of those games.

I’ll also take Trae Young to fill up his box score and hit a combined points, assists, and rebounds total of Over 40.5. Young typically leads the Hawks in scoring, but even when he doesn’t, he’s a distributor who grabs a fair number of rebounds, too. He has gone Over 40.5 in this category in six of his last eight games, and tonight’s high-scoring game should send his numbers to the Over again.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
