Two of the top teams in the NBA face off for the second time this week as the Eastern Conference-leading Cleveland Cavaliers host the Houston Rockets, the No. 2 team in the West.

While big man Evan Mobley’s status for the game remains in the air, Cleveland’s offensive firepower is why I’m expecting a high-scoring matchup the second time around in my Rockets vs. Cavaliers predictions and NBA picks for Saturday, January 25.

Rockets vs Cavaliers prediction

My best bet
Over 227 (-112 at bet365)

My analysis
While Evan Mobley has missed three straight games with a calf injury, regardless of whether he plays or not, this Over is in good shape.

On the one hand, if he plays, that will only make an explosive Cleveland Cavaliers attack stronger; on the other hand, if he doesn’t play, the Cavalier's defense will be more susceptible against the Houston Rockets.

Obviously Houston has been known for its defense this season, but during Ime Udoka’s tenure, the Rockets have been a strong Over bet. The team has only hit the game total Under in 25 of its last 64 games (-16.70 Units / -24% ROI).

And despite it being one of the best teams in the West thanks to its defense, Houston does have the scoring talent to keep up with a team as offense-heavy as the Cavaliers. The Rockets are 12th in the league in offensive rating (114.2) but are one of the best squads in the league inside the arc.

Houston hits the seven-most field goals per game in the NBA (29.7), and while it’s not the most efficient team, it does put up the most shots per game in the league (93.8).

That volume should come in handy against a Cleveland squad that ranks in the back half of the league in twos allowed per game (27.7) and is giving up the sixth-highest 3-point percentage (37.1%).

The combo of Jalen Green, Fred VanVleet, and Alperen Sengun can create issues for the Cavaliers, especially with the Rockets’ tendency to get second opportunities.

Houston leads the NBA in offensive rebounds per game (14.7) and Sengun is sixth in the league in offensive rebounds per game (3.4).

With that said, the Over is the play because of Cleveland’s offense, not Houston’s.

The Cavaliers are second in the league in points per game (121.8), first in offensive rating (121.8), first in 3-point percentage (39.7%), first in 2-point percentage (58%), and fourth in assists (29.0).

Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland have been one of the most explosive scoring backcourts in the league (44.8 combined PPG) and one of the most efficient.

Their pace is also among the best - sixth (100.1) - which should help this Over against a tough Houston defense.

But for as strong as the Rockets are defensively, they’re 6-3 betting the Over since Jan. 5 and should be positioned to hit it again tonight.

Rockets vs Cavaliers same-game parlay

Over 226.5

Donovan Mitchell Over 24.5 points

Fred VanVleet Over 2.5 made 3-pointers

Despite being among the best defensive teams in the NBA, the Rockets have really struggled to slow down point guards this season. Houston is allowing the fifth-most points per game in the league to them (25.58), and that should have Mitchell rearing to go.

While he had just 19 the other night against the Rockets, he bounced back with a 37-point outing on Friday against the Philadelphia 76ers and didn’t shy away from shooting, going 7-for-15 from three. He’s gone Over 24.5 points in 18 games this season.

On the other side, VanVleet is having a huge week from behind the arc, hitting 15 threes in three games this week, including going 7-for-12 from deep against the Cavs. Cleveland allows the third-most threes to point guards (3.41), and VanVleet should hit three-plus for the 22nd time this season.
