Furman vs North Texas Prediction, Picks & Odds for Today’s NIT Game

Furman relies too much on the long ball, and once North Texas takes away the perimeter, points will come at a premium.

NIT action continues when the North Texas Mean Green welcome the Furman Paladins to The Super Pit.

The Paladins rely on the 3-pointer for 42% of their point production, but my Furman vs. North Texas predictions expect the Mean Green defenders to slow the Paladin's long-range barrage.

Read why in my college basketball picks for Wednesday, March 19.

Who will win Furman vs North Texas?

North Texas is 15-1 at The Super Pit. Its 3-point defense at home is excellent and will slow a Furman squad launching 30+ triples per road game. Back the Mean Green.

Furman vs North Texas prediction

My best bet: Under 130.5 (-110 at bet365)

Tonight’s Furman Paladins vs. North Texas Mean Green will be a battle between two of the slowest-playing teams in D1 Men’s hoops.

The Paladins are heavily reliant on the triple — they’ve earned 42% of their points from downtown and drained 37% of their 30 attempts on the road. Those triples led Furman to a 9-7 away record this season, but North Texas may have something to say about that fancy road record.

Welcome to The Super Pit.

North Texas is 15-1 at The Super Pit because it allows a stingy 59 points per game. Opposing teams shoot only 31% from downtown and 41% inside the arc.

The Mean Green must defend well to win. North Texas has good shooters, but it shoots late into the clock, with nearly 15 of its 68 points coming from turnovers. Furman is tidy with the ball and defends decently while surrendering only a dozen points from turnovers.

Both teams should slow each other’s best points-producing methods in a slow-paced slog, which makes me think 130.5 points is too many.

Who doesn't like a good middling opportunity?

I debated taking Furman and the points as my best bet. North Texas is 15-1 SU at home but just 5-8-1 against the number. Furman can light it up, and if it gets hot against the elite Mean Green perimeter defense, it could cover.

That’s why I “bought” the extra deuce on the spread. North Texas shouldn’t win by 11 points, which made this three-leg same-game parlay a much nicer hit and a better chance at landing.
