Seton Hall vs Providence Odds, Picks and Predictions: Value on the Total

It's a Big East showdown between Seton Hall and Providence and with both teams not exactly lightning up the scoreboard, our college basketball betting picks believe the defense will win out in this low-scoring, physical, Big East matchup.

No. 23 Providence is one of the two remaining undefeated teams in the Big East and a perfect 10-0 at Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Seton Hall is listed as the underdog on the college basketball odds board, and they have a challenge ahead of them to win their second conference game of the season against the defensive-minded and undefeated at-home Providence program.

Please join me as I take a closer look at the college basketball odds and offer my best free college basketball picks as I preview Seton Hall vs. Providence on Wednesday, January 3.

Seton Hall vs Providence best odds

Seton Hall vs Providence picks and predictions

Seton Hall last played on the 23rd of December when they were blown out by 20 at Xavier. That was their second away loss in as many tries this season after Baylor handed them an 18-point away loss back on December 5.

In the Pirates' defense, both programs are in the top 50 on the KenPom rankings, and playing on the road brings its own challenges. Seton Hall can’t seem to make a bucket on the regular from inside or outside of the arc at home or abroad, and that will be a big problem for them on Wednesday.

Providence has been tremendous at home, reeling off 10 consecutive victories, including wins over Wisconsin and Marquette. Most recently, the Friars defeated Butler by 10 points in overtime on December 23.

The Friars are a better shooting side than the Pirates. They are nearly elite shooting inside the arc (54% EFG) and below average from behind it. ShotQuality states Providence is the 22nd-best team at attacking the rim, but it also states Seton Hall is equally as good at stopping shots at the cup.

That will make things difficult for Providence to score consistently, but where the Friars make their money is on the defensive end of the floor, and why will this game end Under the oddsmakers' number.

Providence plays elite defense and boasts three players listed on KenPom’s Big East top-10 individual defenders list. Devin Carter, Josh Oduro, and Bryce Hopkins are all excellent individual defenders fueling the Friars' 63.9 points allowed per game. The trio are their top three offensive players as well, and they will be out to sink the Pirates' offense ship.

Seton Hall moves at one of the slowest tempos in D1 hoops. They focus on the defensive end, clean the windows on both ends of the floor, are terrific rim protectors, and force a high rate of turnovers they turn into an average of 14.6 points per game. They are Providence-lite defensively and the Friars don’t shoot it well, so I don’t see them having much success offensively against the Pirates.

Finally, Wednesday should be a classic, old-school Big East battle. Providence has an edge in all the major offensive categories and a tremendous edge on the defensive end. Seton Hall can hang defensively, but they struggle to score, and the 10-day break from competitive hoops won’t help either offense. Play the Under in this one.

My best bet: Under 138 (-110 at DraftKings)

Seton Hall vs Providence same-game parlay

Under 138 points

Providence -6

For various reasons, the Under is my favorite play on the entire Wednesday night slate. The 10-day break from competition, paired with bad shooting and better respective defenses, will be the main reason this game ends Under the total.

Providence is 6-3-1 ATS at home this season. They are also undefeated, and they play in a live and vocal barn that can be quite disruptive towards opponents. Neither team lights up the scoreboard, but Seton Hall is only 5-8-0 ATS and 1-2-0 ATS on a neutral court, and I believe the combination of the crowd and the Friars' defense will aid them in covering the -6.

Seton Hall vs Providence spread and Over/Under analysis

The game has been on the board for just a few hours, and we’ve already seen some line movements on the spread and the total.

Providence opened as a -5.5 favorite at FanDuel and has been joined by all the top US sportsbooks except for -6 (-110) at DraftKings. -5.5 is likely the best number you’ll get on Providence, as I suspect we’ll see the game close Providence -6.5 or higher.

-6 isn’t a great number, but I used the number for the SGP for the article's sake. I believe Providence will cover the -6, but not as strongly as I like the Under 138 at DraftKings.

Everyone except for DraftKings has 137.5 (-110) on the board. I believe Under 137.5 is also a good bet, but I the Boston-based bookie gave us the best number for the Under, and we grabbed it before it sunk to 137.5 or even lower.

No leans for me yet. I will watch this game closely and look for a better number in-game for the spread, and hopefully, Seton Hall gets out to an early lead, the public panics, and we get a moneyline number of -120 or better on Providence.
