Seton Hall plays a suffocating style of defense, and our college basketball betting picks believe they'll drag down Vanderbilt to help both underdog players and Under bettors cash.

Get ready for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off for the second semifinal of the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic featuring the Seton Hall Pirates and Vanderbilt Commodores, which airs live on ESPN2.

Both programs are coming off upset victories, and my Seton Hall vs. Vanderbilt predictions and college basketball picks expect the Pirates to keep this game closer than the oddsmakers think it will be.

Seton Hall vs Vanderbilt prediction

My best bet
Seton Hall +5 (-110 at bet365)

My analysis

The Seton Hall Pirates hang their hat on their defense. The Hall is one of the highest-rated defenses at KenPom, and they play aggressive defense on all 94 feet of the floor.

The Pirates' defense was as good as advertised Thursday against the VCU Rams. They held a talented team to 36% field-goal shooting and 24% from downtown. They convincingly won the glass battle but did commit 18 turnovers.

Seton Hall played excellent defense, and senior guard Chaunce Jenkins got hot. Jenkins scored 22 points, sophomore David Tubek went 3-for-3 from downtown, and they held on in overtime to advance.

The Vanderbilt Commodores got a bit lucky in their upset win over Nevada. The Wolf Pack shot 54% from the field and 40% from downtown, but Vandy turned 16 turnovers into 17 points, leading to that victory. However, they may not enjoy half as many points from turnovers tonight.

I’m betting on Seton Hall to cover the spread.

The Pirates will turn today’s clash into a slog and allow its defense to lead the way. The Hall has length on the perimeter and size in the paint. They’ll dominate the boards and keep Vandy from scoring in the paint.

The Pirates’ shooters are starting to find their touch, and they will face a Vanderbilt defense that doesn’t defend shooters very well. Because of their improved shooting and defensive prowess, I like Seton Hall to cover the number.

Seton Hall vs Vanderbilt same-game parlay

Seton Hall +5

Under 134

The Seton Hall defense will lead to the cover and the Under.

If Vandy thought scoring against Nevada was difficult, wait until they meet the Pirates' stop unit. Yesterday’s game with VCU went under in regulation because of Seton Hall’s defense and lack of solid shooting from anywhere.

Vandy doesn’t play great defense, and they won’t have to against a Pirates side whose offense is its defense.

Seton Hall struggles to score from anywhere. That's why the Pirates play such a slow tempo, and their Under record is 4-1-0 this season.
