The Montreal Canadiens haven’t lost consecutive games in more than five weeks. They’ll attempt to keep that streak alive at home Saturday against the New Jersey Devils.
My Devils vs. Canadiens predictions see the two sides going blow for blow in a high-scoring, high-event affair.
Let’s break things down further with my NHL picks for January 25.

My Canadiens analysis
The Montreal Canadiens have played in some very high-scoring games of late, with their last six outings featuring 42 goals.
Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Lane Hutson have caused consistent problems for opposing defenses while Juraj Slafkovsky and Patrik Laine have heated up of late as well.
Slafkovsky has goals in three of his past five games and Laine has six points spanning a four-game point streak. Add it all up, and the Canadiens’ offense is very difficult to slow down.
Although the New Jersey Devils have defended at a high level for much of the season, Jacob Markstrom has also helped mask some problems. He is sidelined for the next four to six weeks, meaning Jake Allen will take over as the starter for the foreseeable future.
His floor and ceiling on any given night are much lower than that of Markstrom. The proof is in the pudding, as Allen has won only six of 15 decisions for a team that sits fourth in the Eastern Conference in points.
Montreal’s offense, which ranks Top 10 in 5-on-5 shots, expected goals, and goals over the past 10 games, is likely to cause Allen problems.
The Devils have the horses to keep up: Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, and Timo Meier are capable of taking over games on any given night. Those four stars are spread across three lines in Sheldon Keefe’s current variation of the lineup, making the Devils a difficult team to match up against.
We’ve seen a slippage in Montreal’s defensive game of late as well. The Habs rank 31st in expected goals against at 5-on-5 over the last 10 games, meaning they’re likely to put a lot on the plate of their goaltender.
Canadiens vs Devils same-game parlay (SGP)
Cole Caufield has scored every other game on average yet hasn’t found the back of the net in five straight.
It certainly isn’t due to a lack of opportunity, as Caufield leads the Canadiens in shot attempts, shots on target, scoring chances, and expected goals over the past five games. They just haven’t found twine.
Caufield has scored nearly six goals more than expected this season, a sign of his elite finishing. He has the talent to overmatch opposing goaltenders, and drawing a backup rather than a high-end starter in Markstrom should help his cause.
Jesper Bratt has points in 70% of New Jersey’s games this season, and he’s hit the scoresheet in eight of the past 10 against Montreal. If this turns into the high-scoring affair I expect it to, Bratt is very likely to get in on the fun.
