Islanders vs Jets Odds, Picks, and Predictions Tonight: Vilardi Helps Put 'Win' in Winnipeg

The Islanders' offense has dried up, and facing the Jets' stellar blue liners and goaltending likely won't help. Our NHL betting picks sense a one-sided Winnipeg win, coupled with production from Gabriel Vilardi.

New York Islanders have dropped 10 of their last 15 games as they head into a tough matchup vs. the Winnipeg Jets who have moved to the betting favorite to win it all in some places and have been keeping goals off the board at a profitable rate.

With the Jets sitting as near -200 favorites and facing a team on the second game of a back-to-back, is there any reason for bettors to get off the incredible defensive run that Winnipeg has been on?

I break down the NHL odds and offer my free NHL picks for Islanders vs. Jets on Tuesday, January 16.

Islanders vs Jets odds

Islanders vs Jets predictions

Betting Winnipeg Jets games has been a breeze of late as they have a 1.91 GAA since November 4, which is the best mark in the league. They’ve yet to allow four or more goals over that stretch, a span of 32 straight games.

Their opponent’s team total Under 2.5 has cashed in 12 straight and in 25 of those 32 games. Tonight is another great spot to hit that Under 2.5 at a decent -120.

The New York Islanders were blanked 5-0 last night in Minnesota and have a cross-border trip where they might have to start backup Ken Appleby. He has zero starts this year and his last NHL start came in 2017 for the Devils.

The Jets could be playing with a lead early Tuesday and even if they don’t, they proved on Saturday that they can lose and still hit that team total Under 2.5 in their 2-0 loss to the Flyers.

Connor Hellebuyck will likely get the start tonight since the Jets last played on Saturday. He is the betting favorite in the Vezina odds at +175 at SIA. He has a 1.69 GAA and a .942 SV% over the last 60 days (19 games).

The American goalie will face a New York team that ranks in the Bottom 7 in expected goal% and high-danger chance% at 5-on-5 since December 1 and has scored just one goal over its last two games.

This is a play I’d bet to -135 in normal schedule spots, but Winnipeg has a bigger advantage here and this has turned into my favorite auto-bet right now.

My best bet: Islanders team total Under 2.5 (-120 at SIA)

Islanders vs Jets same-game parlay

Islanders team total Under 2.5

Jets -1.5

Gabriel Vilardi anytime goal

The Islanders are anything but a team keeping goals out so there is a good chance Winnipeg gets up early and slowly builds a lead to a possible 4-1 or 5-2 win with a likely empty-netter.

Gabriel Vilardi has been a great replacement for Kyle Connor and has nine goals in his last 15 games. He could get his No. 1 center back but the combo of him and Nick Ehlers has driven this Winnipeg offense. If Appleby starts for the Islanders, this could be very one-sided tonight.

Islanders vs Jets moneyline and Over/Under analysis

Early bettors piled on the Jets’ moneyline as this opened at -170 and has been as short as -200. It’s the right move considering the schedule spot and the different trajectories these teams are taking.

The Islanders are 5-10 SU in their last 10 dating back to before the Christmas break. They’ve slipped out of a playoff spot, have Semyon Varlamov on the shelf, and Ilya Sorokin has not been the Vezina-caliber goalie bettors expected this year.

They’ve had injuries to the blueline, which is one reason why they have been among the most generous teams at 5-on-5 all year. Although Adam Pelech is back in the lineup, Ryan Pulock is still out.

The Jets have Kyle Connor on the shelf but this team hasn’t missed a beat since his departure as the Jets are 12-2-2 over that stretch. They just snapped an eight-game winning streak and have the league’s No. 2 goal differential at +42.

Mark Scheifele is questionable, which might be an issue for most teams, but this is one of the deepest teams in all of hockey that can win almost every line matchup.

If the Islanders commit to Ken Appleby, the line could get shorter as he is a 28-year-old who hasn’t started a game since 2017 and plays on a team that is not defensively sound at even strength.

The total opened at 5.5 and has seen a little Over money, but it’s tough to see this total moving past -110 to the Over 6. The Jets are 15-22-5 O/U this year and although New York has been profitable to the Over, Winnipeg will dictate the pace of this game, which will be a grind for the Islanders’ offense.

If Scheifele sits, Adam Lowry will center the top line and power play, which will be a huge advantage for his point prop Overs.
