My analysis
Tonight marks the third and final meeting of the season between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the New Jersey Devils.
Each side has a victory so far, but one constant throughout these matchups has been the strong production from Auston Matthews, who registered 13 shots while converting two of those into goals. Matthews reached the 65-goal plateau last night in a win over the Penguins, marking his 10th goal in his last 10 games.
A big reason for the late-season surge toward 70 has been the new-found chemistry with Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi, where the line has scored at a 6.78 goals per 60 rate. Plus, the Leafs have been the league's most dangerous offense on the road this season, averaging a league-high 3.58 goals per game — led by Matthews' 29 tallies.
It’s also a really good matchup for Matthews as the Devils have been horrendous in their own end. New Jersey gives up an average of 3.59 goals per game on home ice, with the fifth most high-danger goals allowed. This plays into Matthews' strengths as he sits third in the league in high-danger chances, converting 29 times from that area.
The Devils are limping toward the finish line, winning just once in their last five games and giving up an average of 4.2 goals over that stretch with a 61.4% penalty kill. Tonight would be a great night for Toronto to get its power play going again, as it's only scored twice in the past eight games. However, both of those tallies did come off the stick of AM34.
So whether it’s at 5-on-5 or on the power play, Matthews is poised to continue his goal-scoring tear tonight as he looks to get himself closer to 70.
Maple Leafs vs Devils same-game parlay
Let's lock in the Over on the Leafs team total tonight at 3.5 goals. They’re the NHL’s best road offense, averaging 3.58 goals per game. Furthermore, the Devils allow 3.59 goals per game at home and have given up an average of 4.2 goals per game over their last five.
For my final leg, I’ll take the Leafs to score first. They’ve done this in 57% of their games this season, while the Devils have given up the game’s first goal a league-high 53 times this year (67.9%).
