Both teams are on brutal schedule stretches and will look to play more conservative, resulting in fewer goals.

The Ottawa Senators picked up a much-needed victory Saturday afternoon, shutting out a solid Pittsburgh Penguins offense en route to a 5-0 win.

My Stars vs. Senators predictions see another Under in the cards between a pair of fatigued sides playing for the third time in four nights.

Let’s break things down further with my January 12 NHL picks.

Senators vs Stars prediction

My Senators pick
Under 6 (-115 at Pinnacle)

My Senators analysis
The Dallas Stars are one of the league’s hottest teams, winning seven consecutive games and allowing two goals or fewer in six of them.

While they won’t have Jake Oettinger available in the second leg of a back-to-back, backup Casey DeSmith has performed well this season.

He's posted a .916 SV% and 2.24 goals against average through 10 starts. He hasn’t conceded more than twice since November 28 against Chicago — go figure.

With the Stars playing their third road game in four nights, they'll likely be looking to suck the life out of this game. Fatigue could be an issue, and they won’t want to play a run-and-gun type of game.

That should suit the Ottawa Senators just fine as they’re also playing their third game in four nights and had to travel.

With the offense a little stagnant of late, their best path to victory is likely to keep this contest as uneventful as possible.

They have quietly defended very well on home soil this season, holding opponents to 2.01 expected goals per 60 minutes of 5-on-5 play. Believe it or not, that is the best rate in the NHL.

Senators vs Stars odds analysis

We have seen some buyback on the Senators as the Stars have seen their moneyline price drop from -140 to -133.

The total has seen next to no movement. Even with two backups playing, that’s a little surprising given how many low-scoring games the two sides have played this season.

Dallas owns a 12-23-6 O/U record on the year while Ottawa has fared almost identically, posting a 13-22-6 record vs. the total.

Both teams have been miserably tough on Over backers of late, clearing just once over the past 10 games. Even when one team’s offense spikes, they usually do a great job of neutering the other.

Although the two sides don’t play often, they met twice over the past 12 months. Both games featured six goals or fewer and an average of 41 shots on goal.
