The Winnipeg Jets have lost three of their last four games, all on home ice, and tonight they welcome the red-hot Colorado Avalanche.

Colorado has been one of the best teams in the league over the past month and are scoring goals at a rapid rate. Can Winnipeg slow them down?

I think this will be a goaltending battle, and I explain why in my Jets vs. Avalanche predictions and NHL picks for Saturday, January 11.

My Jets pick
Under 6 (-115 at Pinnacle)

My Jets analysis

Over their past five games, the Winnipeg Jets have been struggling for offense. In that span, they’re only scoring 2.60 goals per game, and most of their scoring has come on the power play.

The Jets have lost four of their last five games, but have converted on three of their seven chances on the man advantage. Winnipeg has been a great team on home ice all year long, skating to a 15-4-3 record, so they should be able to turn this thing around.

The Jets will lean heavily on their first line of Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Gabriel Vilardi, who have carried the load offensively all season. Scheifele leads the three with 24 goals, Connor has added 23 goals, and Vilardi has 19 of his own. The three of them have combined for five goals in the team's last five games, so they haven’t been as hot as we’re used to seeing lately. If the Jets are going to find success, they need more even-strength production from their top line.

Connor Hellebuyck is one of the best goalies in the NHL, and he has been really good over this recent stretch. He’s 7-1-1 in his last nine games and has skated to a .926 SV% with a 1.99 GAA.

Defending is never a concern with Winnipeg, especially with Hellebuyck between the pipes. If the Jets can get the Colorado Avalanche to play a bit undisciplined so they can feed off of their power play, that would be crucial, but the biggest thing for the Jets tonight is to play simple and try to score some ugly goals.

Jets vs Avalanche odds analysis

Mackenzie Blackwood has been outstanding for Colorado as he is 8-1-1 in his last 10 games while boasting a .940 SV% with a 1.61 GAA.

Over the last month, both teams are allowing less than three goals per game. The Avalanche have been one of the best defensive teams in the league lately, surrendering just 2.23 goals against per game, while the Jets are not quite far behind, allowing 2.46 goals against per game.

Due to Winnipeg’s offensive struggles as of late and the Avalanche’s lack of converting on the power play, we should see Hellebuyck and Blackwood thrive in this game.
