Betting on "fair play" by the Qataris and FIFA is a true contrarian bet. I'm proud of you, my son.
It's not a bet I would make, however. There was been no sign of fair play to this point. Shenanigans™ is the name of the official mascot™ of the Qatar World Cup™.
They lied in their bid that they would construct stadiums that would allow the event to taker place in the summer. Can't believe FIFA didn't yank the games from them and just hold the Cup in England or France or Germany, places that could hold it on short notice. But then again, FIFA's been in on it from the beginning. They'd already cashed their bribes.
Just this week they went back on alcohol sales. They lied once again in their bid.
It's the perfect World Cup for the current age of authoritarian comebacks. Bet you they lie about the crowd sizes too.

Thank you Van!! Love the World Cup as it brings a lot of people together in my city. So many different social clubs to pop into, have a beer and watch the passion. Being Canadian I just hope we don't have the attitude of just happy to be here. Enjoy and will check in to the post from time to time. ps: We just passed a law to open the bars at 7am. Should make the Santa Clause parades all over a hoot come later in the day!!

Maybe Canada can do something on the pitch also. Would be great for the country.

Mane being out puts an overall damper on Senegal but you have played them safe, to advance and to lose to the dutch. Both should happen with or without Mane.
Best of luck Van, let's have a good tourney despite the oddness of this one - it is what it is.

Qatar / Ecuador – Qatar under .5 goals +150 (Qatar not to score a goal) (1.5 units) Qatar exactly 0 points +300 (.5 unit) Qatar under 2.5 points -130 (2 units)
One win is in, and two futures in very good shape. In order for Qatar to go over 2.5 points, they have to WIN vs either Senegal or the Netherlands. I like my chances there.
Post Mortem on match 1...
Ecuador will likely be overrated from this performance, and Qatar underrated (if possible). Qatar can't play worse. Their shape was horrific for large stretches of the match - If I were Ecuador - I would have given Qatar much more possession and just countered off of the press. Qatar couldn't handle any type of pressure, and Ecuador was dangerous on every turnover. Zigzag lines all over the place for Qatar.
Ecuador was a lot less dangerous in possession - choosing to just knock it around - although effectively. I look for Qatar to be more aggressive in their final two matches against Senegal and the Dutch - and that should prove disasterous.
* might want to check out your favorite Dutch scorer for golden boot * glad to see somewhat of fair play - at least nothing too major although the first goal taken off for offside was questionable because of who it came off of - likely the Qatari GK which makes offside impossible * stadium was half empty in 2nd half
Good 1st game, only 62 left!

Englands talent shone through today. They came out with 4 in the back instead of the expected 5, which gave them a ton of success in the center of the pitch outnumbering Iran throughout the first half. Their success came out of possession - and through the middle - which is precisely what Iran should have been defending. So a big failure for Iran to understand that goal differential matters and to play compact and to force England wide.
8 goals total in a match that XG was 2.14 England to 1.74 Iran - there was definitely some efficient finishing today. But Iran never really looked in the match. And the early goals just killed it completely - causing Iran to come out in the second half and press England - which actually could have been disasterous but turned out fortunate for them. 3-0 in the first half, 3-2 in the second. But if Iran wanted to - they could have shut it down at HT and taken the 0-3 - England werent interested in scoring at that point and they likely could have left -3 instead of -4 (and could have been worse).
Iran will be hoping for a draw in the USA / Wales match later today. If there is a winner in that match - Iran will have no choice but to open up in their final two matches and play for wins. With a draw, they are right back in it.
England should roll through this group, as expected.

For 80 minutes, it looked a very even match. But it also always seemed like if there were to be a goal - it would come on the counter attack.
In the first half, Senegal were in charge of the ball but the Dutch looked the most dangerous on the counter - and in the second - the opposite. And the goal came from a turnover, and just one moment of true quality for the Dutch. The second goal was also from a counter - although more pure counter than the first as Senegal were pressing for an equalizer. The Dutch had little to no effect from their striker(s) (Janssen, Bergwijn, Depay) - which will have to sort itself out or they wont be long for this tournament.
But Senegal deserved more from this one. They were a bit unfortunate with the result - but if they play anything like this against Ecuador - and possibly with the inclusion of Mane - they should advance still. There were times where the back line was out of shape - zigzag stuff - but overall it was a very solid performance. I will be monitoring the Kouyate injury - as that has big implications.
From a betting standpoint - very lucky to get out of a -160 with a win - didn't deserve it and overpaid.
