My analysis
The San Francisco Giants have gotten off to a poor start since play resumed following the All-Star Break, winning just one of their five games. They get some much-needed rotation help with Robbie Ray returning from the IL on Wednesday to make his first start in nearly 16 months.
It’ll be a tough debut against a Los Angeles Dodgers lineup leading the MLB in wRC+ (124) and wOBA (.342) against LHP. With those numbers, they’ve naturally been successful against southpaws, with a 26-10 record against them.
Dave Roberts’ side has also been tough to beat at home, compiling a 33-19 record. The Giants, on the other hand, have had a difficult time winning games on the road with a 20-32 record.
Ray’s calling card is his ability to generate strikeouts, holding a K rate above 27% in each of his last seven seasons. The punchouts may not be so easy to come by in this matchup, as the Dodgers have just a 17.4% K rate against LHP at home.
After throwing a rookie starting pitcher for the first two games of the series, Roberts can breathe a sigh of relief as Tyler Glasnow returns from the IL. The towering righty has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, ranking in the 95th percentile or above in xERA (2.48), xBA (.192), and K rate (33.6%).
San Francisco’s offense never returned from the All-Star Break, scoring no more than three runs in a game since play resumed. They’ve been nothing special against RHP all month with a 91 wRC+ and .291 wOBA.
Both starters will likely be on pitch counts, which gives Los Angeles the advantage, as it has a much stronger bullpen. San Francisco’s bullpen is taxed after Tuesday’s starter, Jordan Hicks, lasted just 3 ⅔ IP, and four arms were needed to relieve him.
The Dodgers have dominated this matchup, winning seven straight home games against their rivals. With the advantage at starting pitcher, in the bullpen, and at the plate, I like their odds of covering the run line.

Robbie Ray Over 2.5 walks
Tyler Glasnow Over 6.5 strikeouts
Ray has always struggled with his command, walking 3.8 batters per nine innings in his career. The Dodgers are a patient lineup with a 10.6% walk rate against LHP at home, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they draw a few free passes as Ray works out the kinks.
There’s no word on Glasnow’s pitch count, but he didn’t need a rehab stint for his three-week absence centered around the All-Star Break. I find it encouraging that he’s returning straight to the rotation.
The 30-year-old has struck out at least seven batters in 11 of his last 13 starts, so I’ll bet on him doing so again against a struggling lineup.
