The Utah Jazz continue to scratch and claw for wins, yet their close encounters with some of the better teams in the Western Conference haven’t brought them many wins over the last few weeks.
That should give the Detroit Pistons a golden opportunity to continue their hot run, but as I’ll explain in our Pistons vs Jazz predictions, they may not necessarily run away with this one.
Let’s dig into my NBA picks for Monday, March 3.
Pistons vs Jazz prediction
My best bet
Jazz +9 (-110 at bet365)
My analysis
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but I like the Utah Jazz.
While things continue to be an adventure on the defensive end, their offense remains entirely competent. Isaiah Collier stepped up after Collin Sexton’s injury, while Brice Sensabaugh and John Collins contributed in myriad ways.
Now, Sexton has returned to bring some stability to this oft-injured backcourt, and big man Walker Kessler should be right behind him after resting on the front-end of a back-to-back.
Utah fought valiantly while shorthanded on Sunday night in a seven-point loss to the New Orleans Pelicans, and that came on the heels of a huge win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
This team has covered the spread in six of its last eight and has done so in its previous two games played on the second night of a back-to-back.
What I like most about the Jazz is they have continued to shoot the ball well over the last two weeks, knocking down 37% of their looks from outside. This should hurt a Detroit Pistons team ranked 19th defensively against the three. On top of that, they’ve allowed the 11th-most 3-point attempts on average over this span.
Detroit has been deadly on offense in its own right, but its offense has been highly dependent on interior scoring, with the fifth-highest shooting frequency at the rim over the last 14 days.
Utah ranks in the Top 10 in rim defense, and with Kessler returning, it should be able to gain a foothold on defense.
The Jazz may not be the same kind of team on the glass, but they remain competitive enough to believe in — especially with Kessler’s rebounding prowess — and with that I’m just not sure why the Jazz are being spotted all these points.
Perhaps the injury report that comes out before tip will be damning, but even without Sexton and Jordan Clarkson, this team has gotten it done before behind Collier.
After defeating the Pistons in the first game of this season series, Utah can repeat the feat.
Pistons vs Jazz same-game parlay
Collier should set up plenty of his teammates for success tonight, just as he’s done ever since being inserted into the starting lineup 18 games ago. In that time, he averaged over nine assists, and even in a slightly limited 29 minutes in Sunday’s loss, he still managed to rack up eight helpers. If one or both of Utah’s backcourt players listed on the injury report are to sit, this gets even spicier.
I’ll look to attack Utah’s poor 3-point defense with Malik Beasley. Yes, the number is quite egregious, but this is a Jazz team which has surrendered the eighth-most 3-point attempts on average in the last two weeks and the fifth-highest field goal percentage on these looks.
With Tobias Harris and Jaden Ivey sidelined, Beasley should continue firing away; he’s taken almost one more three per 36 minutes with the pair off the floor and in his last 10 games has averaged 10.4 attempts on 51% shooting.
