The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets kicked off the 2024 college football season with an impressive upset in Dublin. There is certainly a risk they could suffer a letdown following that win and travel, but the Georgia State Panthers should still not pose a threat.

My Georgia State vs. Georgia Tech predictions picks will doubt the Panthers’ offense more than anything which means my college football picks expect a low-scoring cap to the Jackets’ wild week, with kickoff at 8:00 ET on Saturday, August 31.

Georgia State vs Georgia Tech prediction

My best bet
Both teams to score 10 or more points — No (+333 at BetMGM)

My analysis
Let’s be clear. This is a bet expecting Georgia State to fall short of double digits. Frankly, it is not an expectation so much as it is value at these +333 odds. Most books set the Panthers’ team total at 17.5, a market unavailable at BetMGM. The Under on that market is juiced, implying 17 is Georgia State’s most likely output.

Why such overall doubt in the Panthers’ offense? Well, some of it ties to Shawn Elliott, resigning during spring practice and leaving Georgia State shorthanded. The administration quickly hired Georgia associate head coach Dell McGee, but the roster still lost players to the transfer portal with little chance to replace them so late in the process.

The Panthers return one starting offensive lineman.  This does not bode well, particularly not after Georgia Tech’s defensive front so flexed against Florida State last week.

Georgia Tech is exceedingly familiar with Georgia State quarterback Zach Gibson, who spent the last two seasons on the Georgia Tech roster, making three starts in 2022. He may not be the starter, an ongoing competition with Pittsburgh transfer Christian Veilleux, though that sums up part of McGee’s issue at the moment. With 50 new faces on the roster, Georgia State hardly knows what it has where.

Georgia Tech shortened the season opener last week, that Dublin showcase featuring just 14 total possessions. It trusted its offensive line and defensive line strengths, along with running back Jamal Haynes and dual-threat quarterback Haynes King, to control the game. There is little reason to stray from that approach against Georgia State. And shortening this game only strengthens the idea of the Panthers failing to put up points.

Georgia State vs Georgia Tech same-game parlay (SGP)

Georgia Tech -20.5

Under 56.5

Georgia Tech leaned on its run game a week ago, rushing the ball 36 times while throwing it just 16. It is difficult to apply too much from last season to this rendition of Georgia State, but it should be noted its defense ranked No. 85 in the country in expected points added per rush against. Little should be expected from this defensive front six, part of a possible 3-3-5 alignment.

If the Yellow Jackets averaged 5.3 yards per carry against the Seminoles, the offense should hum only easier this week.

But there will still be an incentive to shorten this game. Georgia Tech must be tired coming back from Dublin. Trusting the offensive and defensive linemen to get push is a sound strategy under any such circumstances, and that trust should show in a ticking clock.

Georgia State vs Georgia Tech spread and Over/Under analysis

  • After Georgia Tech upset Florida State, this spread surprisingly held steady, sticking at -21.5 until late this week, falling to -21. Most bettors apparently faulted the Seminoles more than they credited the Yellow Jackets.
  • That Dublin win did give some early-week reason to this total falling to 56.5 from 57, simply a credit to how slowly Georgia Tech played. But again, perhaps that was not enough credit.
  • Georgia State has played Power Four opponents three times in the last two years, all three games falling short of their respective totals.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
